Is it possible to turn of PPC sound without muting alarms?

Not with the built in PPC applications. If you have an iPaq 5400 series however you could use vibrate. Which, interestingly enough only vibrates on alarm type sounds such as battery low, when syncing, and when an alarm goes off... I wonder how it tells the difference. You should be able to use this to specify what sounds come through your speakers on the PPC....

Well, there's the hack of overwriting the system .WAV sounds in \Windows with 0-byte equivalents...

Actually, I wondered if the 5450 would behave like that, which is what I'd want. If I'm playing a game, Vibrate doesn't make much sense. :-)
As for how they tell whether to vibrate or not, I think that's easy. Regular sounds get played immediately, so they only respect the Mute or Volume settings. Notifications are delayed, so when the event fires, they probably check whether Vibrate is set and don't play a sound.
