View Full Version : PPC Memory Manager is lacking; is there anything better?

The built in memory manager doesn't always let me slide bar all the way to one side. I don't have many apps installed in RAM (most are on the SD card), but I've received “You’re out of program memory” error messages a couple times when I tried to run something. I checked what tasks were running and there were only a couple (my MP3 player and the game I tried to start). It’s irritating as there would've been enough memory had PPC been smarter about allocating memory. Is there any solution to this?

Just an MP3 player and a game I consider those to be a couple of pretty intensive tasks for a handheld...

But, yes the PPC could definately use better memory management. I think the best we can hope for however is a new OS for the PPC... :?

Your best bet, short of a different memory manager, is to kill the game and MP3 players first. Those are generally the most demanding apps of all. Use a tool like PocketNav or PocketPlus to make the programs easy to kill when you do an exit.

Well, you certainly can't slide the memory controller all the way to the right, because you couldn't run any programs, so you must mean that you can't slide it all the way to the left.

If that's the case, there are certain things in Storage RAM all the time, even if you haven't installed anything (like the registry), so you'll never be able to get it all the way to the left.

Or am I taking you too literally?

I tried sliding the bar to near the edge of the blue line, but it kept bouncing back to the middle. I had to slide it a little bit at a time until it got closer to the end of the blue line (but not all the way to the end). Then I tried running my program again and it loaded properly.

I can understand why PPC doesn't let me slide over to the very edge of the blue line. As it's based on Windows, I expect some programs need to copy to the storage space just like Windows desktop uses temporary directories on the hard drive and a swap file. In my opinion, it's stupid that PPC does it that way, but that's the way it is and it can't be changed. However, the memory manager slider should at least bounce back to the point it would allow you to slide to instead of going all the way to the middle. Actually, the blue line should not simply display how much RAM is available (that's already listed in text below it), but should represent what you can allocate. Then it would at least be useful.

Just curious: How much RAM is left, and what application/s are you trying to run? The way this discussion is going, it would be useless without some numbers. That way, we can pinpoint the source of the problem; whether it's the OS in general, or your specific setup.
