View Full Version : W?BIC!

That's a new motto of mine that I want to put on a T-shirt someday: W?BIC! ("Why? Because I Can!"). I'm sitting here playing with -- er using -- my Pocket PC Phone Edition and carefully explaining to my wife the fantastic 128MB memory upgrade that was just completed by <a href="http://www.pocketpctechs.com">Pocket PC Techs</a>. "See," I explain while salivating, "I can load ALL of my apps into internal memory, along with all of my eBooks, Audible books and MP3s, and still have room on my SD card for a movie!" When she dares to ask me why I could possibly want or need to carry that much "stuff" on my Pocket PC, I reply with the only phrase that comes close to explaining this deeply seated need:<br /><br />"Why? Because I can!"<br /><br />Over the years, I guess I've been known to invoke the "W?BIC!" defense for quite a few of my Pocket PC exploits. To me, though, there need be no further justification for doing things like:<br /><br />• Surfing the Web via WLAN and cable modem on a 240X320 screen, even though a perfectly functional PC sits three feet away<br />• Spending seven hours converting a two-hour movie just so I can watch it on my Pocket PC<br />• Loading 253 MP3s onto a CF card for a 45-minute drive across town<br />• Installing a total of 73 different applications, even though on any given day I may only need five of them<br />• Arguing with my voice dialer for several minutes rather than simply dial using the keypad<br />• Downloading 197 e-mails wirelessly at 9.6kps rather than use a landline 56k modem<br /><br />Hopefully, I'm not the only person here who has done outlandish stuff in the name of W?BIC! Anybody else out there had to utter those words in their own defense?

I especially love the 253 MP3s for a 45-minute drive. Brad, was it you that started a thread long ago questioning whether we're actually more productive with our PPC or not (multitasking and all).
That's what ran through my head in reading this thread. I'm constantly asking myself now if I really make my life any more efficient b/c of my PPC... but then I couldn't imagine not having it around...

Why in the world do you need to spent $600+ on a "little computer".
All you use it for is to write down home work, listen to music, and play games. You are 16...not a big broker person"

No, no, no. You are all approaching this wrong. Think in the terms of an academic. It's for "research" purposes.
I just set up a Bluetooth connection to surf from my iPaq. Will I ever use it? Doubtful. But I just successfully conducted some research, and have gained some dubious form of knowledge.
I realize it may be harder to do this with, say, MP3's, but you could assert you're doing quality comparisons between bitrates.
Oh, and games are the best. "3D Research".

So after three days of trial and error... and 5 hours of encoding... I have Starwars Attack of the Clones on my PPC.
Of course I havent watched over 5 minutes of it.... But I can!

I often use Pocket Controller to enter contacts into my e740 from my PC keyboard instead of just entering them directly in Outlook (which I always have running).
I also IM and email my wife, whose office/computer is on the opposite side of the wall from mine.

• Spending seven hours converting a two-hour movie just so I can watch it on my Pocket PC
I spent about a week trying to find some good piece of software to convert DVD's into MPEG1's to be able to watch them on my PPC using PocketTV. Well, after having converted about ten movies I still haven't watched any of them BUT I DID find a good use for this concept. After having connected the IPAQ to the 12V source in the car and after having tied the unit to a car seat my little two-year old daughter now enjoys the poor mans "in-flight entertainment" where she can watch childrens movies (in landscape mode) while I´m driving. It works just fine and I am really proud of my work.

He he. I dread upgrading to a new PocketPC like I just did with an iPaq 5455. I figure that by the time I install all my apps and other configurations, including fixing crappy installer problems (I do like a clean, organized PocketPC), if I were to do it consecutively without stopping, it would take me 20-25 hours. I'm guessing 125 apps perhaps. And it's not just the big apps either. Its all those small utilities too, the ones without installers. Plus, there's config time. For instance, setting up mail accounts and, not only installing a news reader, but then configuring it with my newsgroups. Stuff like that. Config issues take almost as long as actual software installs.
Thank god for Pocket Backup. Without it, I'd have to kill myself if my PPC ever hard-resetted :)

Hehe! That's great. About five years ago, my dad wrote an article for the MG (the car) newsletter. It was called, "Why? Because we can!" It was all about how he and his other single-guy MG Club members decorate their homes with MG memorobilia, and parts, and trophys-- bascially tacky stuff that a wife would veto as far as home decoration.
For example, he got a friend to weld two ends of a bumper/trunk together and made a two-foot-wide plant pot. Lights, old license plate, and all. Why? Because he could.
Love it.

I can understand the view point of loving partners - I really can - Without being the ppc user it makes no sense.
However I can not understand this view being taken by male friends.
"You don't need a phone that can play music games internet etc. Why don't you just get a free one like us - you'll just break it you pisshead!"
This was the general consensus until I showed them adult video content.
Now 3 of them own PPCPE's -
W?BIC - we're a growing breed - find the right software interest and everyone:
W!YCT - Well! You Can Too

First off... Well, think about it again... I'm not sure if W?BIC is spelled correctly... Coming from a country which is considered the SMS (Text Messaging) Capital of the world... I'd say you spelled it wrong.
In SMS "Wat" = "What", "Wer" = "Where", "Y" ="Why", "dat" = "that", "U" = "You", "r" = "are"...
So I guess it would make more sense if it was spelled "Y? BIC" ... think about it... Toys r Us? or Toys a Us?
Anyway, as for how ou use your PPC? Well, you are not alone.
In 1999, I was surfing with my Palm-size PC because I could. I was getting my email via CSD on a GSM account because I could. Now I still do the same things because I can with the bonus that I have actually grown into it and treat it as a part of life. It's now a essential part of my life... that PDA... Why? Because I can.

Glad to hear you guys finally understand us Mac users! The passion and enthusiasm that I see in your posts for the PocketPC (I like mine BTW, but not the extent you guys rave about 8O ) is the same way that I feel about my PowerMac G4. Long live Apple!

I teach a monthly class for the Utah Pocket Pc User Group, and I remember when I had a class on how to convert movie files and play them back on the Pocket Pc, then I get the question from one of the people in the class. "Why in the world would you want to do that?"
This was my response, simply because you can!

Hi, my name is Dave, and I'm a PPCaholic.
I too feel your pain ,and suffering. Many times I felt so ashamed til I discovered that I'm not alone. There are many others out there who share my addiction. I just want you all to know that there are "users" groups out there with people just like you, and me in them who are willing to help, and share their experiences with you. :D
How do I know I'm addicted? I have just spent several hours putting together a presentation on my PPC using IA Presenter, and an app called Periscope which will allow me to have the whole presentation on the PPC and via WiFi connect to a laptop which is connected to a projector. Very cool most of us would say......Yes it is.....til you consider the fact that the laptop will be on the podium right in front of me. :D
It's a PITA at times being an early adopter, but someone has to pave the way for the rest of the world to have access to new technology. Yes, it is a sacrifice. One I'm willing to make for the good on mankind. :) ...How's that for rationalization!
As Brad says...Why? Because we can!

Sorry, Steve, I forgot to include a link.
Basicly it allows for a Wifi link to a desktop, or laptop, and on to a screen if so desired. It shows what you have on the screen of your Pocket PC, so you can run through a PowerPoint presentation very easily. It gives the user the ability to wonder around the room while managing his whole presentation from his PPC. Dwayne Lamb of Visualbytes is a member of our users group and did a review of it a couple of months. Check out his "expert review" at Handango. He goes into much more depth then I have here.

The big problem that I have is trying to get permission to buy a new PPC.
I've always subscribed to the One Week Rule. I buy without permission-- Then if I can keep the toy for a week without the Mrs. noticing it's too late for her to complain. If she asks where I got it, I say "What this old thing? I've had it for a long time." She just shakes her head and walks away.
However, if it's within a week I have to 'fess up and then obtain post-purchase-permision, which usually involves a bribe that includes a spa day for her. :) :)

Ah... the "logical" viewpoint...
Never works with women. Especially (as mentioned) since the device often consumes time from you that (in their minds) should be devoted to them. They also hate the idea of this much money being spent on what appears to them to be such a trivial device.

When I bought my XDA I gave my wife my HP568. She loved it and is now hooked. So when Dell announce they were coming out with a new device I decided I wanted one. I went to my wife and said this...."Honey would YOU like a new Pocket PC I'M buying!" How could she argue. She gets a new PPC and I get to use it when ever I want. Why not just buy matching PDAs? Then it could be a bonding experience, sort of a his and hers thing! That way the significant other doesn't feel neglected, they get to feel they are sharing something with you.
Then when someone gives you a hard time, the significant other can just say, W?BWC! (Why? Because We Can!) :P

I think that most people don't understand when significant money is spent on what appears to them to be unimportant. You see the jewelry as unimportant, whereas she may get the same amount of enjoyment of it as you do from your PPC. Everybody is different. My husband has never made a purchase that I personally thought was excessive to the point that it deserved comment. I think understanding is needed on both sides as to what is important to each. Resenting the jewelry purchases but wanting acceptance of electronic purchases seems to me to be a contradiction.
That being said, while we're only 2% of the board, it's a bit frustrating to read this thread and see "you men" ( :razzing: ) are talking like there aren't any women here! Ah well. Suppose it's not that big of a deal really.

Hey! I used the politically correct "significant other".
And my fisrt order of business is to totally corrupt any woman silly enough to date me, even if I have to get diamonds mounted onto a PPC to convince her how wonderful they are! :P

I have to say that at home I have a desktop, a laptop and 2 ipaqs. One day I was sitting at my desk with all of them switched on, trying out a connectivity experiment (my excuse anyway ;) ) - when my fiancee walked in saw me, and asked why I needed so many computers.
After a fruitless hour trying to explain her the whys and wherefors, I hard reset one ipaq (3660), installed on there a dictionary and calendar apps etc, and then gave it to her. She asked why she would need it when she has paper and pen that never runs out of batteries, so I showed her how she could use it. What really clinched it though was when I showed her solitaire :) So now she doesnt question my 'addiction' so often anymore, and Ive noticed shes using the ipaq more and more as time goes by.
All I can say to you others out there is 'baby steps, my friends, baby steps'.
And to my fiancee I always say 'join me on the dark side and together we will complete your training'.
I wont tell you what she says to that 8O

You're absolutely right Kati.
My apologies to everyone. I meant it as a joke... but it was obviously not a very tasteful or considerate one.
My girlie got me into PPC... Until she sold me on them I had 7 previous Palm OS machines. 8O

Great thread Brad...very amusing. I esp like how the thread has veered a bit toward the sig other impact of W?BIC.
It brings to mind a small offshoot that I constantly use...
W?BIM
It goes something like this...
While surfing the web on my laptop, with iPaq next to me, I see a new PPC doodad I just have to have
I order!! (with FedEx overnight the delivery method of choice)
New doodad arrives, but wife is the first to get it...she opens it! (rut roh)
I come home, anticipating a new PPC doodad to configure/use
She holds the item in her hand...and says... Why ANOTHER doodad?!? :x
I look at her ... and can only come up with ... Why? Because I Must!
Oh, I should have started by saying...Hello, my name is Bill, and I'm a PPC addict!

I love the 'Y?BIM'.
I used to feel a little guilty about all my PPC toys. Both my husband and I read a lot, and one place we tend to read is in restaurants. A lot of restaurants are too dark for paper books, so I'd pull out my iPAQ and read, while he would be squinting at his old-style book.
When I got a new iPAQ I gave him my old one, and it helped at lot. I downloaded some books and a couple of games for him, and he could read in restaurants, and read or play games while I was shopping. He still didn't totally bond with it though; he never backed it up or downloaded anything himself.
This Christmas I got him a new non-hand-me-down Viewsonic, and things are definitely starting to change. He called Viewsonic tech support for help with drivers, installed Outlook and Active-sync on his desktop, activated Microsoft reader, bought and downloaded Microsoft Reader and Peanut Press books, and even installed a couple of games and the Washington DC Tube app for his business trips there. I got him an A/C charger, auto charger, and battery extender on eBay, and a case from CompUsa, and I think he's starting to wonder what else he might want.
Now, about that PPC with diamonds...... I can live without the diamonds, but I would like to have some new case options. :)

Thank you, but for me at least it wasn't necessary. :) I did learn a while ago that stuff like this is just part of being "one of the boys". I may get mildly frustrated, but it takes more than that to actually get me offended.

Have you guys ever seriously thought about getting Pocket PC Thoughts shirts made up?
Yes, it's on the "huge list of things to do that keeps getting longer and longer". But maybe....give me a few days. 8)

My vote is to get a T-Shirt. My wife wouldn't let me wear it outside, but at least I could wear it while I was in the house. Y?BMWWLMGOWI! because my wife won't let me go outside with it! (Is that one too long?) :)

Pick some event to meet at and setup a tailgate party with a Pocket PC Thoughts flag overhead, a PPCT beer cooler, PPCT director's chairs, PPCT sunglass neckbands and PPCT logo plastic beer cups!
Knit shirts with a pocket logo would be nice( to wear to work).

Ok, I sense the need for me to finally launch that Café Press store. I'll see if I can get at it tonight - they offer a wide variety of clothing options, although most are "white XYZ with logo on it" - I don't think I can do the blue "proper" shirt. I'll check though!

Please not white! 8O I want other people to acutally be able to see I am wearing a PPCthoughts item of clothing  . A t-shirt can be worn...... about 9 days a year here in the UK. Long sleeves would be OK though (Not white please 8O).
p.s. did I mention I hate white t-shirts!

Maybe put a poll on the back of the shirt, with the last option being the haircut one.

To comment on some points made earlier....
Hi, my name is Emily and I'm a Female Geek.
When I sleep alone, my PPC shares my bed with me because I play games or read right before going to sleep. Though when I have company, the PPC gets relegated to the nightstand.
I have IMed my boyfriend from my cell phone when he was 2 feet away from me and there was another computer right next to him for my use. Because I could.
When he showed me that he could change the TV stations from his Ipaq, I thought it was the coolest thing ever! How neat to be able to go to someone's house and really freak them out by being the TV ghost :)
Someday when I get married, I expect that we'll have matching PPCs and a wireless network set up at home, so he can IM me to tell me when dinner's ready instead of yelling up the stairs :) And I'll never give him a hard time about buying new tech toys as long as he does the same for me!
Oh and just to further illustrate my dorkiness, the first 2 things I loaded onto my Axim were my DnD character sheet, and the Slicer and Dicer dice-rolling program. I still carry around my paper character sheet and my real dice. Why did I put them on my PPC? BIC!
Wow, you all are geeks. 8O

W?BIC! is the reason I've loaded an FTP server onto my Pocket PC and FTP'd into it. :)
