Found out today that you CAN access your AOL email account to read and write with a PPC2002 using Internet Explorer simply by logging onto AOL Australia (!):

www.aol.com.au

Select "Members Email" tab (not "Mailbox" icon), enter screen name and password and your good to go.

You STILL need to sign-on with another ISP first, but at least you can get your email. Tested with both CF modem and PC network card. Works great.

Call AOL's PPC department directly at toll-free 1-866-265-3019 to let them know that a real PPC2002 client application is long overdue!

AOL should not subject their customers to accessing the internet remotely from another provider, then having to load an Australian site just to get their email!  ARE YOU LISTENING AOL?

Actually the tech was refreshingly knowledgeable. You CAN get AOL email (well, PPC's not withstanding) nearly anywhere in the world with a phone line. My fancy DSL service provider requires modem scripts to even log on for dial-up service in little towns like Manhatten and Washington DC. :?

Thanks.

This is really helpful (although, also, totally insane  ).

I have an old copy of the AOL mail app which has been working ok, as long as I'm already connected to the web and then specify TCP/IP LAN Connection, but it's not officially supported, and it's also slower than your method.

Why even go that far. Just go to www.aol.com, no need for the .au

Doesn't work on a PPC.

This is cool! Now I can get all my spam on my Pocket PC.

Seriously, here's the direct link for the AOL Mail section:

I just made that a Favorite in Pocket IE.

I still use AOL 1.0 for Pocket PC without any problems. Granted, I haven't tried it by dialling into an AOL phone number, but I use it every day via my wireless broadband connection at home, and using my bluetooth connection with my T68 phone.

The version I use was a free download at the time. I have listed the version information below.

AOL Mail Version 1.0 Build (1.0.114)

I've been using this on Pocket PC 2002. Originally on my upgraded iPAQ 3630, then on my 3975 and now on my 5455. Again, I don't know whether the dial up part works in PPC 2002.

I added this info to the Phone Edition FAQ.

AOL 1.0 seems to work with broadband or pass through on the PC but causes problems with modem/dial-up connections. I know that I first took a chance on the AOL 2.0 (the one with clear warnings not useable with PPC2002) and not only did it require a hard reset on the 3955 but also corrupted Activesync and that too required re-installation. The link to AOL 1.0 has some others reporting the same results with that version. Anyone attempting using AOL 1.0 at all should be prepared for full re-installations and have EVERYTHING backed-up first!!!

Don't you think AOL Australia will notice the spike in traffic throught that portal and then maybe limit it to Australian users?

Just a pocket pc thought.....

(he he, always wanted to say that!)

No, they won't do that.

I strongly urge you all to call the number, to write to customer service, and so on. It will help. No matter what internal pressure there may be from employees, it's the external customers that causes the business side to sit up and take notice.

I found this discussion a little confusing.
Is the consensus that AOL 2.0 is no good only if you want to use a modem? A MODEM!?! they were used in the last millenium! Doesn't everybody use bluetooth enabled cell phones and WiFi?
Dave ([email protected]) was kind enough to send me AOL mail 1.0, but to save him grief, it is available from http://www.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=627
Is AOL 2.0 safe to use with pocket pc 2002? Is it better?

I suggest re-reading this thread, but after that if you STILL want to try AOL2.0 I can help you get a copy. Let me know... just be prepared to hard reset AND re-install Activesync!

Did using AOL Australia stop working? I log in and get the "Click here to continue" box, but, after I click, I get an error saying "The requested URL was not found on this server."

It had worked before, but doesn't seem to now.
