I'm looking at the 39xx series of iPaqs and the only difference I see from HP web site is that the 3975 has 48MB of Flash rom vs. the 3955's 32 MB, and the 3975 has built in BlueTooth.

The price difference is $300 8O ($799 vs. $499) if you include rebates. Am I missing something here? Is there a bigger difference than a little more flash ROM and BlueTooth??? Are the displays the same? Are the batteries the same?

And while I'm on it, why does the 3975 cost more than the 5455?

I totally do not understand the iPaq pricing scale. :?

Well, originally, the prices were closer... $699 and $799, respectively. Displays and batteries are the same, in fact. You've pointed out the only two differences... BT and the Flash ROM. Which means right now the 3950/3955 is a much better deal.

I'm not sure where you are getting your price info., but before rebates, the 3970 is $649 at buy.com and the 3950 is $549 (they are the twins of the 3975 and 3955 - other than maybe a minor diff in software included.)

And yes, for that extra $100 you are buying more ROM and Bluetooth. The iPaqs generally do cost more than most other PPCs and that's up to debate whether it's worth it or not. IMHO it is, but there are plenty out there that will disagree with me :D

BTW, I'm not questioning the value, I'm just trying to figure out their pricing structure. I'm considering switching from a Toshiba e740 that is plagued with problems, and I am trying to figure out the iPaq model line heirarchy. The pricing is a little weird as I pointed out (the previous model line costs more than the new model which seems to have more features :? ). I thought for $300 (HP's price) there must be some additional difference between the two 39xx models - I guess not.

Nope, rom and BT are the only differences. spec for spec they are exactly the same apart from that.

Saw the h3955 at Best Buy today for $499. I paid $580 a month ago and thought I was getting a deal. (Maybe I was...a month ago).

With careful shopping, price-matching and a coupon, I paid $390 for my 3955 a couple weeks ago. Check Amazon, OfficeDepot, Staples locally too, you might be suprised.

Jimmy, I've been wondering the exact same thing. I'm so glad you posted this question. I've also been checking prices, HP's site too, and the 5450 is listed between the 3955 and 3970. What gives? I've read tons of reviews and such about both the 39xx series and 5450, and the 5450 deffinetly has more to offer. So why is the 3970 still more expensive (retail)?
Does HP consider the 3970 a better device? I'll keep checking the site(s) but I remain a bit confused.
