All this talk about our contest has given rise to some discussions around time zone, and in a burst of "regionalcentrism", I didn't really think it all through when talking about it. So, for reference sake, the server is on Mountain Standard Time, which is GMT -7. Regardless of what time zone our correspondents are in, their posts cue up in MST. Hope that makes sense to everyone! So for those of you in places around the world where it's already 2003, it will be a little over six hours until the fun starts. The good news is that the giveaways will last for many hours, so it should be fair for everyone no matter where you are in the world. :D

You think I was sober when I started FirstLoox.org?

Actually - it's just past 1 am GMT - so averaging out the bottles of wine remaining between those still awake - and factoring in an ever decreasing drinking rate - I should still be awake and drinking in six hours time -

Mashtim - if you can persuade the pilot to fly over Suffolk (England) and let yopu parachute down - you can share this particularly fine vintage (1996) of New World champagne with us!!! 8)

JonnoB

Perhaps it should be a 'stardate' or just referenced as total 'jiffies' since 1980 (that is when the computer clock seemed to have started).

I'd bet in 50 years or less there will just be a world time and all this nonsense with timezones will be gone. The problem then though is when does a new day start?

I used to have a discussion with my father about metric vs imperial system and the idea that there would eventually be a 10-day week.... if for no other reason than to get people to work 8 out of 10 days instead of 5 out of 7. ha ha

The problem with 'world-time' is that eventually our world won't be the only one... we will have to base time on something more constant and 'universal' - hence the 'stardate' astronomical based time system suggested :)

The closest we have to 'world-time' is GMT, but do you want to say, "meet me in NY and -5:30" ?

I seem to remember that the French tried that after the revolution. It didn't work. Our bodies seem to work best in a 7 day rhythm. Odd that, almost like it was designed that way.

Best is a state of mind. 8 hours of sleep, remember that? Who on Earth follows that these days? If you want a 7 day week, then you're gonna function on a 7 day week. Heh, I'm A-ok on three hours sleep a night for weeks at a time sometimes, then other times I sleep 10 hours just for a change. I hate getting into some boring routine where if something changes, you feel horrible all day. I end up somehow switching sleeping schedules completely every few weeks.

My sincere hope is sometime in the near future they perfect the anti-sleeping methods. There's already several drugs being developed for various uses that could allow a person to function completely alert and normal for 48 hours without sleep, sleep for 8, and feel perfectly normal and healthy the next day. I for one would completely welcome a even more 24 hour world, we're moving there... slowly.

Before someone goes into the "mental effects of long term sleep deprivation", most of that is still being studied and worked out. It's not a blanket rule, it effects everyone differently. Several people, including myself, would welcome it. Others cherish their sleep. To each his own.

I thought y'all had hunting guns, and shotguns. I had heard that other guns could be licensed with a little work. I stuck around a week in GB, once, couldn't see much for fairly thick fog, just hit ground the wrong week.

There's an annoying difference between they were out to get you and a random incident.

Ummmm, not quite. Apart from Japan, we apparently have some of the toughest laws on gun ownership in the world. You can only own a .22 target pistol IF it is kept under lock and key at registered gun club and only used there. You can get a shotgun IF you NEED it for your work – i.e. you are a farmer etc. There has been talk about banning air guns, or at least raising the age to buy one to 21.

They don't like us doing this.... :2gunfire:

I seem to remember that the French tried that after the revolution. It didn't work. Our bodies seem to work best in a 7 day rhythm. Odd that, almost like it was designed that way.

Ultimately we both agreed that the 7-day week was here to stay - more of a grand design than we could comprehend. We then would discuss how it would not make sense... how do you make a year based on the unit 10 when there are physically only 365 days? In fact, what makes 10 so special other than that is how many digits most people have on their hands?

So for those of you in places around the world where it's already 2003, it will be a little over six hours until the fun starts. The good news is that the giveaways will last for many hours, so it should be fair for everyone no matter where you are in the world. :D

It's all good, having moved 7 timezones to the east recently has thrown everything out of whack anyway. At least everything from back home is still in the same "whack".

So that means I beat you to the new year by 8 hours! wohoo! Do I win anything for that???

You should lock cheaters out for a month. How dare they! They get an EXCELLENT, free site AND they want to milk you guys some more. You should charge a monthly or yearly fee for this site. It's the truly cheapskates that ruin a community like this...
