I'm trying to get an idea of how many Axims came with a crappy D-Pad. Mine works great except for the right direction, which only works sometimes.

Doesn't seem to be any problem with the D-pad, 100% for the first choice :D . Having said that, I don't know what mushy feels like. I have only used my Dell but it works acceptably in all four directions.

Everything on mine works but up is mushy. Not so much that it's overly annoying though. Left / Right / Down clicks and works perfect... up has no click so it pushes a little deeper, but responds 100% if pushed deep enough none the less.

Hmm. Mine are not consistent, but it is "useable" That being said, I'll probably trade for a new one in a month or two.

Mine is pretty bad...pressing up doesn't do anything unless you really smash down on it. Pressing to the right is pretty bad as well, but at least it registers with "reasonable" force.

Been trying to get another one shipped to me from Dell...on the phone for over an hour "waiting for the next available customer service representative." Ugh.

Sad such a wonderful device shipped with such an obvious defect. I wonder if I can whine enough to trade up to an X7? ;)

Mine's pretty bad to the right and not that good up either. It's useable, but I'm still going to try to get it replaced - eventually. :)

You may not want to wait that long... it appears (from posts I have seen on other web-forums) that the replacement policy is a little skewed. A return within 30 days of receipt date will be receipt date will result in you being shipped a brand new, unopened machine, but after 30 days you get a refurbished unit. I don't know if this means you may run the risk of getting a refurbished axim or if you will definitely be getting a used (i.e. we tried to fix someone else's d-pad well enough to ship it to you now) unit. Hopefully someone else may be able to get some actual clarification on this...

I was on the phone with Dell for about 75 minutes last night. I had made it through the first round where I actually got to talk to someone (that was after only waiting like 10 minutes) ... but when he transferred me to the internal Axim line (he said there was no direct line), I waited for over an hour before giving up.

I have since made contact via e-mail and am seeing if I can get a replacement unit sent that way. Mine works great in every direction except up. There's no click and you can see that the pad is visible off center with a gap in the lower left corner.

Sounds like me, cept my gap is in the lower right. Perhaps I'll try calling today, just don't really want to go through that again.

so far mine works perfect, only complaint is the lack of a 5th direction, ie the enter function.

I'll let you know in a few days when I get mine. Ordered Monday. Went out UPS Tuesday. Sounds like they've got their production cranked on up to have it shipped the next day.

mine is a littlemushy, but I really don't mind it much. I almsot always use the stylus to navigate, except in avantgo/mazingo, which I do use it. and mine does click and has never been stuck.

In a few months I *may* swap mine out, i'm pretty happy with it so far but I'll give it time, maybe in time it will become worse (the D-Pad) and i'll get a replacment, maybe by then Dell may have switched to a new d-pad hardware and fixed the problems.

It's really mushy, but useable, and at least it is correctly centered.

however, does the D-pad work as an action button when pressed in the center? or is it only if I press down hard on the scroll switch?

EDIT: Nevermind, I searched up the d-pad issues on the axim -- it just seems to turn on the backlight. Too bad though -- I liked having enter on the nav pad. :(

The action button is only by pressing in the scrollstick.

I'm impressed. I had that posted less then 5 min ago! :)
