View Full Version : Newbie Question: Volume Control

I'm using earphones to listen to MP3's on my Dell Axim X5.
I find that the music is way too loud (I have slightly sensitive ears).
So I put the slider bar in Windows Media Player as far back left as I can, but it's still too loud.
Annoyingly, the sound decrement in large intervals... it's either too much sound, or no sound at all.
Is there some other way to set the sound without using the slider bar?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thx!
PS: I'm a newb. Is there a search feature on this forum so I can look thru prev msgs to make sure I'm not repeating a previously asked question? thx!

Get an inline volume control from Radio Shack :)

Your might try going to start/settings/sounds & notifications. In there is a slider bar for system sounds. Mine was set all the way up and turnng it down to just above half way made the difference for me. Good luck.

To make your PPC a bit more MP3 playerish, there is a button mapping feature in Media Player. It's under Tools/Settings/Buttons. You can assign hardware buttons to Start, Stop, Switch tracks, toggle the Screen On and Off (battery life). Using the jog control to do volume is very popular (along with the other suggestions).
Note the check box at the bottom. You might want to consider that if you listen to music in the background while doing other tasks. Annoyong to try to move down in a contact list and have the volume go down on you instead :)

I think the question was more to do with the fact that even at the lowest non-muted volume setting the volume is too loud? I think there are some utils that let you adjust the volume at smaller increments, but I unfortunately, I don't know what they are.

R We Clear is a good one (http://www.rweclear.com/).

Hi,
Thx for all the replies.
RWeClear definitely allows for much finer volume adjustment. However, the smallest non-mute level is still too loud for me.
I have very little knowledge about audio stuff.
Will getting an inline volume earphone at Radio Shack solve my problem?
[Ie. can the earphone turn the volume to a degree that's even lower than what the actual device (PocketPC) can output?]
Thx!

Yes. This was really needed for the original iPaqs, which had even louder output than what the Axims do now. Talk about bleeding ears 8O

Yes. Figure the headphones can't really make the sound much louder than what's output by the PPC (it could slightly if there was less resistance in that particular headphones than the ones you're using now), so any volume adjusting is downward from there. I have a splitter in my soundcard out port and plug my speakers and headphones into. I leave the sound setting on the computer at a single level, and do all volume adjusting on the speakers and headset.

Thanks!
I guess I'm making a trip to Radio Shack then.

Keep in mind when you go, that you can buy an in-line volume control to use with your existing headphones, or any you buy in the future, or a set of headphones/earphones with a built in volume control.
