I'm having giddy dreams of using an Axim plus an expanded battery and a fat memory card to watch movies anywhere. Three questions: First, is there a way to play DivX movies on a PPC? Second, what kind of playback performance can I expect from an SD card on a 400mhz unit? Third, what happens if I play a movie that's a little too large for the Dell's screen (say, 350x240), and does software exist to cut down the dimensions of DivX format movies?

first of all...you will need to get pocket divx go to http://www.ppc4all.com/appdetail.php?id=1020 and get the software. Dont worry about the size and to be honest with u i dont know what performance to expect. But to tell you the trut...I am planning to do the same with my 3955...only no big battery for me. Oh well have fun.
PS dont excpect the quality to be above 25fps

BTW, consider using the latest alpha at www.pocketmvp.com (the new name for PocketDivX) -- they've improved performance and DivX support substantially.

You will want to re-encode the movies to fit your screen. While the software does a good job of scaling if so desired, it will perform better when the size is made to fit in your screen. Also, it does a poor job with mpeg movies compared to PocketTV, so get that too. I stream movies from my server using WiFi (NETWORD storage emulator) to avoid having to use a large storage card, so I assume performance would be similar. When travelling, a large storage card would be appropriate which is how I assume you dream of using it.
