e740 Problems Listing Folders on the CF Card?

Hi Toshiba dudes. We AximX5 users have a question that only e740 owners can help answer, since the e740 and AximX5 are the only two PPC's I know of that have both a CF and an SD slot.

I'm going to vote OS/Programming problem, but that only shows up because of a Dell design decision. I'll explain.

In the eVC documentation it indicates that storage cards are called "Storage Card" and "Storage Card 2". Dell chose "CF Card" and "SD Card" to make it easier on people. This shouldn't be a problem, EXCEPT if programmers hard coded "Storage Card" and "Storage Card 2" into their programs as the only way to access these cards. There are other ways to programmatically access the storage cards (ie, just start your file selector at "root", which will list the storage cards as subfolders, I believe), but if someone uses the eVC (and probably eVB) documentation as gospel... This is my guess, anyway.

On a side note - the default file selector dialog in eVC (and again, probably in eVB) really sucks. I wrote my own, which I will be using if I ever need to have a user select a file. I don't like that they assumed people would only have 1 level of folders! Especially as PPC's have more memory, directories become very cluttered if you have to limit yourself in that way.

Yes, Microsoft made a very controversial decision to drop hierarchical folder support in the Open dialog with PPC 2000/2002. They wanted the folders to be more like Palm/Pocket PC "categories", to make it easier for newbies. However, it annoyed a lot of us who use hierarchical folders all the time.

There are third-party open replacements already. I can't find them right now, but I've seen several different apps support one common third-party standard.

Well just to check this out I hacked my registry and renamed my CF Card and SD Card to Storage Card and Storage Card 2, but it still functions the same on the Axim. Still have to have a folder of the same name under My Docs in Main Memory to "see" the folder on one of the Cards. :(

It sounded really good to me as well. :lol: I did notice one thing though, I've become quite attached to the SD Card/CF Card naming convention, much nicer than Strorage Card and Storage Card 2. :wink:

Ha! My Jornada with either the MMC/Battery or the PCCard adapter has both an MMC/SD slot and a CF (or PCCard) slot. I did try this and the Jornada works fine. It however conforms to the Storage Card and Storage Card2 convention.

Another drawback to the AXIM naming is when I got my MMC/Battery. I put a blank SD card in (Storage Card2) and copied everything from my CF card, programs, files, etc. directly to the SD. I then removed the CF and reset the Jornada with only the SD card in it. It was recognized (reassigned?) as Storage Card and all my programs worked fine. That wouldn't work with the AXIM concept, without reinstalling all the apps or spending hours in the registry.

Wonder what is more likely, Dell releasing a patch to make the naming conform or be selectable, or MS releasing a patch to make the file dialog actually read the directory structure :?:
