Guys...found this great site, to test what your actual connection speed is when connected through your pocket pc phone edition...open up internet explorer on your pocket pc and go to this site...

http://www.texan.net/speed.htm

then post what your connection speed was and who your provider is....

as tested my line speed was

37.1 kbps
4.5 bytes/sec

136k per second via 802.11b and an Orinoco wifi card on my iPaq 3850. I'll test it with my 5450 when i get it :D

But, my SDSL line tests about 320 from other java based testing applets.

how did you setup wifi using the xda?

what slot did you use to get a wifi card in there?

I started this poll mainly to find out what others were getting using standard gprs connection...please specify what connection method you are using..

ITS FUNNY....i just tried this test using both POCKET IE and THUNDERHAWK

pocket IE gives me 37k/
4.5 kbytes/sec

thunderhawk shows me 4080kbps
500kbytes/sec

thunderhawk does use some KICK ASS compression....

why doesnt MS follow with Pocket IE to make it more useable!!!

Because TH is actually a service and requires that they run servers. I don't think that would be worth adding $50 to the price of the ppc especially considering most people wouldn't use it.

So I decided to waste some T-Mobile minutes and give this a try.

A couple things to note:
1. The GPRS connection speed is dynamic -- it varies during data transmission -- so taking an average gives a better idea of speed.

2. The test site depends on the browser cache -- so you need to clear your cache/history if you revisit the site. otherwise you get some rediculous result like 4000bps as someone above posted.

I did three tests:
a. compression on & 115s00 baud (still says 19000 but I clicked 115200 anyway)
b. compression off and 115s00 baud
c. compression on at 1200 baud (just to see if the baud setting does anything)

I ran 4 runs on each of the 1st two (a & b) and a few on the last (c).

COMPRESSION ON:

19.4 kbps (2.4 kBps)
34.0 kbps (4.2 kBps)
45.3 kbps (5.6 kBps)
40.8 kbps (5 kBps)

COMPRESSION OFF:
This seemed to make much less reliable connections despite having full signal strenght at time (something that rarely occurs in my home!). There were several times when it was sending data then slowed to a crawl and stopped, requiring me to reconnect and ultimately not being able to connect at all until after a soft reset.

Lost connection
40.8 kbps (5 kBps)
Lost connection
Lost connection
34.0 kbps (4.2 kBps)
Lost connection
Lost connection
34.0 kbps (4.2 kBps)
Lost connection

COMPRESSION ON but 1200 baud:

12.8 kbps (1.6 kBps)
45.3 kbps (5.6 kBps)
17.0 kbps (2.1 kBps)
37.1 kbps (4.5 kBps)

So its difficult to say if this really means anything given the variablility of the speeds. In general I seemed to connect more reliably with compression set to on under connection settings. But there didnt seem to be a big difference in speed.

I'm also not sure the baud setting is really doing anything since one of the fastest downloads 45.3kbps was at a baud set at 1200....

Oh well -- I'll keep compression on.

Is there any other way to test speed of an 802.11b connection? I am getting a 5450 and already have an Orinoco PCMCIA card with my iPaq 3855 and would like to review the performance difference for my site; however, I'm not sure how to accurately measure the performance of the network in and of itself.

Do any PPC FTP programs you guys know of give the speed of tell how long something took to transfer?

CRAPPOLA!!!!

i cant believe this! i hadn't setup my t-mobile properly -- see this post for details and refer to here. do this if you havent done so yet!!!!

http://www.t-mobile.com/help/services/tz/tt/pocket_pc.asp#22
(scroll down a bit to creating a GPRS connection)

when you try to connect it will ask for a password -- leave it blank but check the remember password box.

after doing this its connecting almost immediately and my download speeds with this test are consistently 45.3!!!

man do i feel dumb for not realizing it didnt set itself up....
the problem is that it would connect to the internet out of the box (got it from amazon.com) but not very reliably and typically with slow connections.

Well - I figured I would try out the change mentioned in the thread and here are my results.

Before new connection - getting pretty slow speeds - 6 - 21Kbps. Created a new connection as stated in the t-mobile FAQ and connected. Got 50Kbps from the texan site. Spb reported close to that as well. Switched to my old internet connection and got faster speeds.

Deleted the new connection and reconnected with the internet settings delivered with the phone. Slower speeds again.

Recreated the new connection and connected with Internet Settings delivered with phone - Faster speeds 40-50kbps.

Not sure if it is a coincidence or not, but having a second connection seems to help. Oddly enough, the second connection does not stick as the default for the internet connection. Not sure why.

Sounds like a software issue, but not sure. Anyone?

TIA,
Mark

It could be that that image it loads is being cached in your browser's cache. Have you been clearing your temporary internet files in between tests?

Cortex
12-31-2002, 09:10 PM
its probably real.

not clearing the cache gives outrageous results like 5000k.

check the default settings for connection settings and if you are using spbGPRS monitor, you need to change the options on that as well -- i was in the habit of clicking its icon to make the connections.

some of the other programs have default connection settings as well so check the options.

TH reflects the speed the service downloaded the files at. TH then compresses the overall image of the screen and delivers it to the Pocket PC in a proprietary way.

the person who tested thunderhawk probably didnt clear their cache after reloading the site.

i got the same download speed with pIE when i forgot to do the same.

THANK YOU :werenotworthy: to all that posted on this thread.
This helped me to understand how to use it, what to expect, and most importantly that I needed to get the new settings.

you could try the edge network from at&t, but as far as i know it would only work on a laptop, but i think it was 128k or something.
