View Full Version : Free eBooks . . .
Does anyone know where I can find a good selection of eBooks for free? I am thoroughly disgusted with attempting to find anything for free on the windows ce system.

How about 1,505 of them? Well, a couple here and there are no longer free, and some others require Reader to be activated, but generally, those are free.

If you want some useful historical documents, I've created versions of the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights (and other amendments). They're on my Web site (http://www.garlic.com/~svvg/svvgppc.html#EBOOKS).

There are tons of good books at http://www.blackmask.com/page.php
My personal favorite is their section of Emma Goldman writings. http://www.blackmask.com/page.php?do=page&cat_id=388

You might have to wade through a couple of these to find the free e-books, but most of these sites have 'em.
Also, if you're not squeamish about the copyrighted stuff, you can find a LOT of e-books on IRC chat... in #ebooks and #bookz and #ebookz, depending on what server you're on.
Thanks for all the replies.
Pony: I am having some trouble downloading books from MS; I can't find the link to actually download the books. Can you help me?

I wasn't the one who posted about Microsoft, but if you're referring to takotchi's link to http://www.mslit.com/default.asp?mjr=FRE, I can probably help.
When you see a book you like, click on the title. You'll see a detailed page about the book. On the right right of the page, it should say "Available from" above one or more graphics. Click on one of the graphics; you'll either get a download dialog or be linked to the site where you can download the book.

Thanks, Pony, my fault; I looked at the wrong one. Anyway, I eventually figured out the problem.
One thing I noticed is that the free ebooks listed on the sites mentioned earlier are usually links to or postings of the same ebooks: the ones available via public domain.
I think Baen was the lone exception; I managed to pick up the full version of a book that I had read the excerpt of a long time ago. Very nice...I hope they continue offering books.
