http://www.intrinsyc.com/products/pda/

Don't judge this baby from Intrinsyc by its looks! My first thought was: "Oh no! Not another brick!", then I read the specs. This device is a real chameleon: it can run Windows CE .NET, Smartphone 2002, Pocket PC 2002 and Linux. Tri-band GSM/GPRS and Bluetooth. Very, very cool!

• Support for Windows CE.Net, Microsoft SmartPhone, PocketPC 2002 and Linux operating systems.
• Intel PXA250 XScale CPU @ 400MHz
• Integrated GSM/GPRS tri-band communications
• Integrated Camera
• Color TFT VGA display (touchscreen LCD with backlight)
• 64Mb SDRAM, 32 Mb Intel Strata Flash
• Bluetooth and IrDA communication support
• USB Client/Host controller
• Multimedia Card/Secure Digital (MMC/SD) support
• Compact Flash, Ethernet and RS232 serial support
• SIM card support
• Internal speaker, microphone with headset detection
• Real time clock

Oh mama 8O

Just curious, that bargain pda blurp makes it sound like the hardware featureset is fluid (including the CPU) and can be repackaged for different vendors? For example it says 4" VGA screen but the photo seems to show standard Pocket PC QVGA...

Judging by photo (assuming that's 4" screen on there), how big is that thing?

OT P.S. I wish HP had continued their bleeding-edge trend and equipped the 5450 w/ a VGA screen, working downsized as PPC2002 QVGA for now but expandable later with future .NET releases...

The price will dictate how well this thing sells !

Umm, "32MB Intel Strata Flash?" Doesn't that meant that this will suffer that same fate as the Viewsonic and the iPAQ 1910? Having to run the OS in RAM?

Does a CE.NET platform take advantage of the 400MHz speed? or is it ignored like the existing devices...

Anyone know if the Ipaq's will be upgradable to CE.NET?

No, Intel's strataflash is NOR ROM like in iPAQs, Jornadas and Toshibas. Not NAND ROM.

No, you won't ever see CE.NET as the OS on the device.

Now, will you ever see Pocket PC 200x based on CE.NET rather than CE 3.0? Most certianly. When? Dunno.

Will your iPAQ be upgradable? Dunno that either, but given Compaq's most excellent track record, and assuming HP's dismal track record decision makers don't corrupt the iPAQ team, yeah, I'd say iPAQs will get the upgrade - though I doubt 3600's will be eligible.

VERY TRUE...ESPECIALLY IF THIS IS GOING TO ACT AS A PHOEN DEVICE, YOU'D HAVE TO HOLD IT UPSIDE DOWN...UNLESS THEY INTEND IT TO BE USED WITH A WIRED EAR-PHONE/MIC THINGY

Bluetooth baby. The ultimate way to use a PPCPE! Too bad there's not a device that can do it today.

No the mike is at the lower right corner.

I guess this will never be sold to consumers, as this is a DEVELOPMENT platform

I've given up on Bluetooth. It's been around for a while and nobody is really using it. I paid the extra $50 to have BT in my Ipaq 3975 so I could sync wirelessly and surf the web around the office...but it's one more step than just throwing it on the cradle...and who can really surf within 30 feet of an access point...might as well just go to the real desktop-PC. I agree that it's good for wireless headsets etc...ONLY

No the mike is at the lower right corner.

You're right. I missed that the first time. So it looks as though it has two speakers. One probably capable of putting out sound at a quality exceptable to listen to music (not your typical boom box) and the other to use as a phone type speaker.

Of course there is absolutely no point in this device running Windows for SmartPhones because of its pocket pc form factor. When youve got a big brick with a touch screen you wouldn't want to run an even more cut-down os on it (except presumably in this case for development purposes)

There is the adapter by Jabra for their Bluespeak headset that lets you use it with any phone that has a 2.5mm jack...

Interresting device. It has potential, but I do not see this as a consumer device at all, ahich is ok because apperently it is targeted at developers anyway.

It does seem like it would be huge. Haven't the OEM's learned to give us a POV to gauge size from?

This is the kind of thing that I've been talking about wanting for some time. We the consumers want more features! And better Quality; not that the quality out there is bad, just that improvements are always welcome! VERY WELCOME! And Ipaq needs to get out of it's rut and upgrade to dual slots. They've been riding the "sleeve" excuse too long now it's getting old. Get up to date with the pack, they're getting to the point where the pack just might be getting up and leaving them behind, there are too many choices now days, besides; they could still have dual slots and sleeves if they wanted to, corse I will be the one that DOES NOT WANT SLEEVES! But Dual Slots?

OK back to original topic; I buy this new device if it was available!

No the mike is at the lower right corner.

For me, the mic is on top and the speaker below. That let's you use it upside down so as not to leave facial wax(or whatever the name is) on the display.
The vey little hole on the lower right corner, is anything but not a mic, but I could be wrong.

Too bad it's "only" 32mb ROM, I want to dual boot at least 2 OSes :P

That tag sounds more like PR than actual feature though, as in "let's point this out because no one else has yet, to make us look good."

It still looks like a killer device, a geek tank :P

...and who can really surf within 30 feet of an access point...

Some Bluetooth Adapters and a lot of Bluetooth APs have a range of 100m. I've seen a Tecom USB Bluetooth Adapter achieve about 65% - 80% of the range that I got with an Orinoco WiFi Card.

The iPAQ has been inovating very well. Look at the iPAQ H5450 Pocket PC. Its features equal a PPC with three expansion slots: integrated SDIO, integrated Bluetooth, and integrated WiFi.
In my opinion, they've gone the extra mile by still retaining compatibility with older iPAQ Expansion Packs. I know it might have been better for them to have two open expansion slots, but having everything integrated saves money anyway. After all, after having an SD Card slot, Bluetooth, and WiFi, what would a second slot be used for anyway?

There have been comments about the size but it simply adds another option to the comsumer. Personally, I like my handhelds a bit larger (providing that we could get a larger screen).

Yeah, but it is one device rather than two. Right now I hardly carry my phone, I always carry my PPC

All I want to know is... When, Where and How Much!!! :way to go:

What - no WiFi? Just a little 802.11x would complete the package. I guess I have to hold out for the iPaq.5600.

Agg, a directional pad on the lower-right side of the device! Great for left-handed gamers, but horrible for right-handed ones. ;)

Uhh.. I think I'd rather carry around two smaller devices than this BEAST (to steal the term used by Deus).

This thing looks big enough to drive around town, you know what I'm saying?!? I'm just wondering if it has safety bags!!

It appears to have Bluetooth. If you click on the link and look at the right side picture (http://www.intrinsyc.com/images/products/pda_right.jpg), you can see the word Bluetooth written there.

From what I have heard, the 56xx designed to be a phone will not have WiFi.... :(

This thing is a Reference Design - Vendors of real devices can pick and choose what they want to include. The specs posted are the shopping list. No commercial device will ahve everything!

dont for get big is beautiful :)

its not ment to be brought by Joe Public, would most of you pay 2K for a phone?? no, its a delveloment platform to show off technology, and help vendors develop software for there smart phone devices. Its a way of speeding up development, while a vendor works on getting there hardware working they can develop software on this device at the same time thus avoiding having to wait for real hardware to get software working, making the time to market shorter. Its got a custom board in there so you can change processors and amount of memory check out http://www.intrinsyc.com and http://www.intrinsyc.com/products/microEngine/

btw the display is better than anything you will curently see, its 640x480 you average ipaq is 320x240 you have to see the thing running to see just how cool that display is :)
