I'm looking for a program for my Axim (w/Symbol card) to sniff-out APs. I think Ministumbler has the functionality that I'm looking for, but I don't think it works with the chipset in the Symbol card.

Any related info would be great.

Thanks.

Got the message "could not find the adapter" -- anything else out there?

Yes, ministumbler from http://www.netstumbler.com/ which supports a Compaq and Lucent card and www.boingo.com which supports the Compaq PCMCIA card. :(

I just enter "any" into the SSID field and turn off encryption. If someone is broadcasting SSID you will pick it up. I used this downtown where I live and picked up an AP at a local bookstore. I got right on and checked my email. This stuff is great :!:

msprague, we know that much. You need special software if

1) there are more than one provider and you want to choose
2) if you know nothing about the other: is it encrypted? ad-hoc / infrastructure etc.

Jorgen, so do you have any help for those of us with Socket/Symbol cards as the original post requested?

I think at this point the stumbler-like apps are only written for the Orinoco series (Ministumbler) and the Prism chip set (various). I have not yet seen any that work with the Socket/Symbol.

I just sucked it up and bought an Orinoco. Works if you have the ability to use a PCMCIA card, and they are reasonably priced. For this you can get by with the silver (cheaper) since you are likely not going to be concerned with WEP of any flavor. I got the gold so it could be used with my network as well.

Nope. I have a d-link dcf-660w CF1 card myself and I need something like the mini-stumbler or boingo program. I emailed the Boingo developer and got the answer that he would provide support when (and if) he received a NDIS 5.1 driver from the card manufacturer. Now, NDIS is for Windows machines and I doubt somehow that d-link will make a Windows driver for the 660w.
