_ignore_my_docs file?

Could someone please explain again the purpose for this file (_ignore_my_docs) on a memory card. Was having problems getting apps (e.g. P.Word & Excel) to see files on an SD card until I deleted this file. I created the "My Documents" manually on the SD card through Active Sync. I know I have read about this file somewhere before.
