View Full Version : What do you call your PPC?

Janak Parekh

My last Off-Topic thread was a huge success, let's see how far we get with this one.

Unless you're "lame" and use the default PocketPC partnership name, you generally want to give your PPC a name in About, under Settings.

What do you call yours?

Again, to start, myself: I am almost totally lame about this. I put my name, followed by "Handheld". i.e., "BigDaddyJHandheld" (except using my real name :)) Even worse, my desktop and laptop follow the same conventions. "BigDaddyJLaptop", "BigDaddyJDesktop", etc.

I'm totally non-original with this. How 'bout you? I'm sure some of you are more creative...

Mine is "Kati42". That probably qualifies as lame.

My current desktop is "Deep-Thought". My previous was "Orac". My laptop is "Zen".

Heh - there's a big NO. I should also be reviewing 2 papers, but I'm not in the mood at the moment. I did get out 10 job apps so far this week, so at least there's progress on that front. Now the long long wait to hear anything...

Bad part about sending out 30+ applications is all the rejection letters that means. <sigh>

My "old" Toshiba e740 was called "Marconi" (wireless, y'know!).

 Say, do you like the Compaq Tablet PC? I looked at it today in a store for about 30 seconds, and I had mixed feelings about it. The hinge is really, really weird.

All my computers are named after Japanese weapons or words.

Main PC: Kensai (company name as well)
Server: Wakazashi
Video Testbed (Shuttle SS51G): Tsunami
Wife's computer: Yumi
Laptop: Shogun
Primary Pocket PC: LittleShogun

Other names for Pocket PCs have included Daikyu and Tanto.

Anyone want to break down the psychology of those names as they related to the devices? 8)

I use band names. My 3835 was "a_fire_inside". My new Dell is "deadtofall".

Mine is very boring -- SHM_iPAQ_3870. If I get an iPAQ 5450, it will be SHM_iPAQ_5450.

I think giving names to machines (except robots) is silly. :-)

It's loser15...

Why, you ask? Because my employer (lge corp'n) has us on NT4 and for some reason, every time I logged off and came in the next day, I would have to set up a new partnership and completely re-sync everything, which became extremely annoying, let alone time consuming (on a serial port connection - no USB on NT4 for us). So after working my way through the same name with a different suffix every day (ending in 01, 02, 03...), I switched to the main name to "loser" (and started at 01 again) because that is what I thought of the partnership arrangement between my PC and the PPC - a complete LOSER...

Not sure what caused the problem as it has been over a month now since it refused the same name after a login. So here we are, still a "loser15" and haven't thought about it since. Don't want to change the name until I get a new PDA and we get switched to XP (in the pipeline)... (here's to dreaming) :x-mas:

My old iPaq 3630 is called Zedd. I read too much Terry Goodkind, obviously.

I used to call it Lazarus after a 3 month period where I had to bring the damn thing back from the dead 4 times. Irony only works so far and the joke wore a little thin.

A few years ago I used Star Trek references for all my systems:
Domain: STARFLEET[list:20c1e675ab] Server: ENTERPRISE
My main workstation: LCARS_TERM_0
My laptop: PADD_0
Casio E-200 PADD_1
Network printer: REPLICATOR_4M (an old HP LaserJet 4M)
and various others[/list:u:20c1e675ab]I wasn't the only user of that network, and I was really the only one who knew what the systems were just by name. Now I use a boring but far more practical naming convention where machines have names that describe what they are or what they do, as well as who their primary user is, if applicable. Domain: BEAUVAIS[list:20c1e675ab] Server: SERVER0
My main workstation: DAVE_WS0
My laptop: DAVE_L400
Older laptop: DAVE_N505VX
Toshiba e740: DAVE_E740
Network printer: HPLJ4M (an old HP LaserJet 4M)
802.11b access point 1: WAP11_0
802.11b access point 2: WAP11_1
and various others...[/list:u:20c1e675ab]So there you are... way more info that I should be giving out about my network. ;)

Well, all of my PC's and servers at home are named after cities from Terry Pratchett's Discworld series:

Win2K-AS server: ankh
Linux server: morpork
TiVo: holywood
i-Opener: rocksin (aka "Music With Rocks In")
Laptop: quirm

But my iPAQ, in a massive fit of non-creativity, is named "H3835".

Whenever the subject of hostnames comes up, I always remember the Sun workstation room in 010 Smith Hall at the University of Delaware, probably the best example of naming schemes I've ever heard of. All of the IPC workstations were named after flavors of ice cream: strawberry, vanilla, tutti-frutti, etc. The file server? It was named "freezer". :D

I started, on my gateway back in 98, naming my PCs after Jedi. So the new ultra l33t (at the time) PC became Obi-Wan. I got another PC a couple of years later that they were retiring from work so I named it Qui-Gon.

When I got my new Dell Dimension 8200 I named it Anakin (younger, stronger, black...).

But I think I'm going to break from tradition because I've got my heart set on referring to the Axim as "Clamato". I still think of it as the Clemente. But Axim makes me think of Maxim ... so there is some other naming potential there. muahahha

All of our equipment is named according to some chaotic, ramndomly organized scheme. There's little to no relation between names, I suppose.

My iPAQ 3670: Chardalus (after my online persona's last name)

Server: Basement Dweller (it sits in the basement, untouched because it never needs to be. )
Parents' Computer: Burkie (after Burke Mountain in Vermont, where we ski each winter)
Brother's Computer: Vanthor (after his online persona's last name)
Sister's Computer: Kampasi (after her online persona's first name)
My Computer: Kyles-Computer (boring, yes. Makes it easier for me though.)
Network Printer (Lexmark Z42): Bob-the-Much-Hated-Lexmark (works half the time, prints only in black and white for some unknown reason  )

I was more inspired by greek mythology. A big advantage is that you do not run out of names very fast:

* My Laptop: renamed it to Hephaestus (very ugly god that nobody wanted to know)
* My girlfriends Desktop: Hera (wife of Zeus)

My iPaq is called Marvin. All of my computers are named after characters from the Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy. And the Pocket PC is mostly disconnected, nobody talks to it except maybe half an hour per day - must be depressing... The primary computer is (of course) Trillian and there is also Zaphod, Ford and Arthur. The rest of named devices: the cellphone is Cartman (= Eric = Ericsson) and the access point is not very creative igate (Siemens I-Gate).

The company where I work has a boring name scheme based on geographical location, machine type (server, worksation), OS and a number.

Why, "Little fella", of course.

That way when the alarm goes off I can hold it up to my ear and say "What's that, little fella?" As far as the partnership name... that's way too volatile to give any *good* name to.

Hmmm... I never intentionally started giving names to my Pocket PCs - but when I had the Casio E105, which I just called the Casio, I just started shortening it to 'the Cassie' and then it became Cassie.

When I got the iPAQ 3630 and came to give it a name for AS I just followed the precedent and called it Connie (kind of short from Compaq).

The two @migos were Amy and Amy II (try making a girl's name from Palmax!).

The 3870 was Connie II, the 3970 was Connie III.

The Loox is Lucy (cf. the @migos!).

The 5450 will be Connie IV (of course!) and, in an act of historical revision, I now refer to my original Nino as Nina!

At one point, in the distant past, I considered buying a Toshiba E570 - and can actually remember saying to my Wife - 'I don't think I can have that - I wouldn't know what to call it!'

I would never name my laptop or desktop - they are never nice enough to be called anything that can be repeated in polite company!!!

"What is there in a name. Is not a rose by any other name still a rose?"

Anyways my naming scheme is a bit random. Currently my ipaq goes under the name "Minimonster_v2". It was originally called Minimonster, but after a small repair job where the screen was replaced and my ROM updated I had to give it a new name to set up a partnership with my desktop pc. Hence the "_v2" appendix.

My (main) desktop is a homemade box that is always current in specs through a rigourous update'n'replace-scheme. Since this machine is the only one with full network access to my other machines, firewall and virus protector for my homenet, and a VPN uplink to work, it's called "Omnicomp".

My secondary computer sits in the living room and functions mainly as an mp3 jukebox and movieplayer. This machine is made up from spare parts from my main box. This is called "Scrapheap" for natural reasons.

My third computer is a trusty old Amiga 4000 that i use mainly for putting titles onto video. The only reason this box is on the network at all, is that I do my graphics on Omnicomp, and needed a quick way to transfer them to my amiga. Getting it network with the other machines and the net was no mean feeat tho' 8). This is aptly called "Dodo". When all came to all, the Amiga did not quite fly, and now it's extinct.

My printer (old lexmark) is called "Scribe".

I have been thinking 'bout namimg all of my stuff after Babylon 5 ships, but my guess is that has been done already...

I to am a big Star Trek fan. I own an iPAQ H3970 and named it PADD-69. The number references the year I was born; nothing special.

And to anyone worrying about changing the Device name go ahead, most programs are linked to the "Owner name" not the "Device name".

For everyone using the recursive naming convention, you do realize that if you go into the %WINDIR%\Application Data\Microsoft\ActiveSync\Profiles\ or %BOOTDIR%\Documents and Settings\[User_Name]\Application
Data\Microsoft\ActiveSync\Profiles\ directory (depending on OS used, I forget the convention for NT :)) you can delete any older, non-used profile directories, enabling you to name your PC exactly what you want?

Mine is "Kati42". That probably qualifies as lame.

My current desktop is "Deep-Thought". My previous was "Orac". My laptop is "Zen".

Kati, sorry if someone asked you this already, I was too lazy to read through all 16 pages.

Was your previous computer Orac named after that computer (actually a plastic box with some Christmas tree lights) in Blakes 7?

They did not, and yes it is. My husband and I own the whole series on VHS (NTSC even!). I actually built him an "Orac" one Halloween to go with his Avon costume. (For those of you that don't know "Blake's 7", Avon is the cool, tough character in the series. He has nothing to do with driving pink cars and selling makeup).

All my male friends that have seen B7 want to be Avon, but have concluded they're more like Villa....

I'm boring. My iPaq is Pocket_PC, and my PC is Dell8200, since it had never really occured to me to name my devices. Maybe I'll change them... my iPaq could be Tristan da Cunha, an island that's the farthest inhabited place from any other civilization, since it has no wireless. :D
I don't know about my Dell... maybe Grata, since Dell gave it to me for free to replace my obsolete one (my old one was broken... gotta love extended warranties ;) ).

I had an old HP printer that refused to print, so I called it Breakomatic. :D

From Tristan da Cunha, South Atlantic Ocean (http://website.lineone.net/~sthelena/tristaninfo.htm#How%20To%20Get%20To%20Tristan%20da):

How To Get To Tristan da Cunha

Cruise ships (stays of one to three days, returning to the ship each night)
NB. Weather conditions may make it impossible to disembark.

Again, I am late. :)

Mine are named after Terran units from StarCraft...

my Desktop is "Goliath-1"

and my PocketPC used to be "ghost_e740".

I had a brain fart, and after the last hard reset I accidentally named it "Goliath_e740", but that will be rectified with the next hard reset.
