View Full Version : Random User Survey #4

Oh joy! It's another privacy-secured-because-we-don't-compile-the-results random user survey! This one should be pretty simple, but if you need to take a minute to check, that's ok too.

Ok, I'm cunfused, is there a FAQ somewhere? What's this "Female" option mean? ;)

Pretty dismal really, at the moment it's waaaay lopsided. Is there a legal way we can attract more women to PPCT and PPCs in general?

I guess from now on I'll have to be more forgiving of you guys--often in the past I'd (privately and mentally) chide you all for the extemely "male" tone and tenor of the discussion. Once I actually even touched on that in a post. But I really can't blame you for that anymore!

Unfortunately, the results aren't that surprising - but the good news is that I've seen the number of female forum posters increase by about 500% in the past month. I think there are three of you by now.

But good grief--why are the numbers so skewed?

I can't figure it out myself - after all, I'm a natural chick magnet, so why aren't there more women?

Really though, Pocket PCs are a largely male-dominated industry, so the fact that most of my readers are male geeks isn't a shock. ;-) I'd love to have more female perspective here though! Maybe I should post in my wife's nylons... :rainbowafro:

I'm not too fond of pink either, but I do find the Viewsonic birds quite attractive. Since I already have an iPAQ, I'm getting my husband the Viewsonic for Christmas. :D

I enjoy this site a lot (for news, gossip, and entertainment as well as for help), but if I didn't have a Pocket PC I would never have discovered either this or any other PPC site. I know, that's pretty obvious, but really it all has to start with PPC advertising -- if more women had PPCs, then more of them would find their way here.

I've posted this before, but I'm not averse to repeating myself. If you remove the "techy-toy" factor, women should be a perfect target audience for PPCs. To start with, most of the women I know carry around pretty extensive calendars and address books of one kind or another, and usually at least one paperback book. They could certainly benefit from some kind of PDA. If they've thought of a PDA at all, they're mostly aware of Palms; it's not so much that they believe that Palms are simpler as it is that they've not even heard of Pocket PCs. All my women friends spend time on the internet, mostly from Windows desktops, and might actually find PPC more familiar-feeling than Palm. Most of them carry pretty roomy purses, so finding room for any reasonably sized Pocket PC wouldn't be a problem. If there were TV or magazine ads (or product-placements in TV shows) showing real-life use of PPCs by women, they'd work their way into the female consciousness. I don't watch too much TV, other than sports, but maybe a sit-com mother could quiet a noisy child in a restaurant by whipping out a PPC with a children's ebook on it, and if Rachel on "Friends" had one, sales might increase to both sexes.

It seems that Microsoft is mostly focusing on the business user; even though PPCs are packaged with media player and a few games, they only seem to be advertised in the business section of the newspaper. Maybe this will change now that PPCs aren't much more expensive other portable electronic devices like portable CD players. They could also do things like including coupons from music-download services or ebook publishers.

I started hearing about PDA's over at the Organized Home message board (yes, I'm female, and was very interested in finding a better way to organize my schedule).
The Palm is the only unit that is really discussed there. I wanted to buy a Palm, until I shopped for one, and stopped to look at an Ipaq. That's when I decided to get a PPC, and, I just got my Dell last night. I even called in sick today (my daughter was really sick, well, she has a runny nose!) and downloaded an amazing amount of programs and games.
I was just telling my husband tonight about how male dominated the PPC is. I was looking for themes at one of the theme sites, and OMG!! Let's just say they weren't quite what I was looking for. Also, I was looking for games, and I was pretty suprised at how many strip poker games I had to wade through to find something I might want.
I hope with the lower prices, the PPC might become a little more popular. But, I don't think it's there yet.

Well, you bought one, the more we get the better :D

There is a lot of software out there that's not strip poker-ish. In fact, I only saw strip poker for PPC on the web for the first time last weekend, and I've not had the slightest desire to install it anyway. Keep watching this site, you'll get lots of cool ideas. ;)

I was looking for themes at one of the theme sites, and OMG!! Let's just say they weren't quite what I was looking for.

At one of the sites a woman started uploading themes that featured male models. Apparently she was sent threatening private messages and publicly chastised and harrassed (not by the site admins, btw) to stop "ruining" the board for "all the straight people". I think some of the people on the board felt it was much more likely that she was a homosexual man than a heterosexual woman.

I had to laugh about just how offended some of those guys were at the male model themes. They were standard shirtless-man type photos, not *nearly* as explicit as just about anything in the "lingerie" section on the same board. Those guys should try "avoiding" images of sexy women for a week and see how (im)possible it is. ;)

I say if you think it's okay for there to be so many images of half-naked (or fully naked) women about, then you have to be willing to cope with images of shirtless men without complaint. Only fair.

paqman_lover

i was figureing 70/30 male to female myself so i was surprised as well.

i think this is showing a failure in advertiseing as well as what's available for the pocket pc. For example, I think women read more books then men or at least are willing to carry a book around outside of the home to read when they're bored. If e-books had a responable price structure with good availability of titles and ease of use, you could sell the fact that for less then the space of a book you could carry around all your favorite books and the books would never fall apart.

Also as a side note, my sister who is a tech geek and gamer really really hates pink. makeing something pink does not instantly make it female friendly.

I know the site quite well, I have some themes there, mostly animated. All I can really say is thank God for the filters that you can set. While I appreciate the female form, having to sift through 100 of the same type themes evey day to see the new posts was getting tiring!

Out of the 92 new themes today only 28 are not women  Takes me much less time to browse them with the filters on

Cheers!

I guess I didn't know about the filters over there, I just clicked on Newest to see the latest themes, LOL.
I did find what I was looking for, my Worf theme, so I was happy. :P
I just love this PPC. I took it to work today and I think I must have sold at least 5 of them for Dell. My boss uses a Palm, and couldn't believe the transcriber writing thing.
My husband even wants one. He asked if I would get him a cheap Palm, until I told him about the Grafitti thing, and, now that he's seen the PPC handwriting, I don't think I'll be able to sell him on a Palm. (He just wants the calendar stuff). I'm not sure what we'll do.

That's pretty horrible, and I don't think it's really appropriate behavior. But do realize that in many (most?) cases in the past men have done precisely that. I'm glad to see that those stereotypes are finally flattening out, though.

Sad part (or maybe that's not the saddest part) is that the attitude didn't change after these people found out she was female. It was still too threatening to their "maleness" to be tolerated.
