Can someone please explain the difference between Pocket PC & Pocket CE to me? I have come from the Palm OS platform and have an Axim ordered. Is it PPC just the newer name?

There is no such thing as "Pocket CE", unless a third party wrote an app called that.

Pocket PC 2000 and 2002 are based on the Windows CE 3.0 operating system. Basically, the "Pocket PC" moniker gives a UI and a suite of applications on top of the base OS. There's also "Handheld PC 2000", which refers to the clamshell units with the keyboards, also running WinCE 3.0.

I think you mean Windows CE. If I remember correctly Windows CE is just the framework for the OS (APIs, function calls etc) and the PocketPC is a particular manifestation of that framework, that provides the GUI and user interface.

Is there a newer version coming soon in order to be optimized for the new xscale processors? I have been reading that the current ppc2002 is not and reports that the speed b/w 400 and 200 MHz is not noticeable.

Yes, the new WinCE (CE .NET 4.1) has XScale optimizations. However, this may amount to a 5-10% performance difference. The main issue is that this is a new processor, and the OEM's haven't really optimized the hardware to take advantage of the XScale.

BTW, it's not clear yet whether Pocket PC 2003 will be based on CE .NET 4.1...
