Received mine yesterday as well! Love it! The finger print scanner works better than I had expected. The only real problem I've had with the unit so far is that it doesn't fit smoothly into the cradle. I have to fight with it a little to get it inserted correctly.

I just received mine from Mobileplanet this morning. It soooooo much better than the 3670 I used to have. i agree that the fingerprint scanner is easy to use. plus, the bluetooth manager is much better than before. Go HP!

Anyone know when the phone edition will be out? And who will carry it?

So I wonder if anybody with one can assure me of a couple of things before I shell out:

- Nobody is experiencing a backlight problem

- It does actually ALWAYS play alarms

My 3870 has been been experiencing problems since the move to 2.2 and there is no way I'm going to buy a new machine with the same problems no matter how sexy.

No backlight issues ths far. As for the alarm issue, I am not sure what you mean.

I can't speak for the 54XX (And I know that's what you really are looking for.) but having had every Ipaq to date, I can say that the issues you have were solved very well in the 39XX release. I had the exact issues (As did many others.) with my 3875. Since moving to the 3975, I've had nothing but praise for the Ipaq.

Go on jump in! The water's warm.:D

The problem with alarms is that they sometimes don't go off until you actually turn on your Pocket PC. My iPAQ 3870 has this problem at times -- an alarm time will pass without the alarm popping up, but the next time I turn on my iPAQ, I get the alarm.

Also, there's another issue, but I don't know if it's related. If I snooze an alarm on my iPAQ and on my laptop (while connected), the laptop alarm still pops up, but my iPAQ never gives an alarm again. Has anybody else seen that one?

OK - I have to read up on this one - ever sine the end of the 3600 series (of which I have one - upgraded to 2002 OS) I have turned Compaq off as a solution - quality just fell off the table.

I've been looking for a PPC device to effectively enable me to drop the cell phone - so one that has the Phone Edition on it, yet does not sacrifice all of the current technology advances out there like the XDA does. Don't get me wrong - I would jump on the XDA now if it weren't for what I saw with the LOOX.

Being in the US it will be a longer time before I see a final solution out of that platform so I am hopeful that someone - like HP or another will do the "one-up" and get a competitor out ther to the XDA. Right now HTC owns this spot and frankly, all the device is about is adding a phone and SD feature to the IPAQ 3600 series - sorry folks, but thats all it has to show - which can be a lot (or a little) - I guess it depends on how you read this ;)

I'm looking for an xscale device thyat supports both CF and SD, has a great screen - awesome battery life and a battery that I can swap out is/as needed - kinda like the Axim has on it now....

Back to the original intent of this posting... Anyone aware if HP is looking at developing this into the Phone Edition and when that time frame may be?

Yes. The first device will be the 5650 (or somesuch), which will be GSM/GPRS. The antenna will be a taller cellular antenna instead of Wi-Fi. There is already a SIM card slot in the back, under the battery, for the 5450 (but it's a dummy). There's already a microphone in place. Rumor also has it they're working on a CDMA/1xRTT version.

I'd estimate about 4-8 months to see these start to come out.

So the 56xx will be BT and GSM/CDMA-1xRTT but no Wi-Fi?

But I want all 3! (insert tantrum here) ;)

this is different then what I had read months ago, I was told that the GSM was bluetooth, Wi-Fi, fingure scanner. But the CDMA was only bluetooth. Anyone else hear about this?

It's all rumors at this point, but the rumors we heard here, on PPC Passion, and on InfoSync were:

- 5450: WiFi, Bluetooth, Biometric
- 56??: GSM/GPRS, Bluetooth, Biometric
- 5???: CDMA/1xRTT, Bluetooth, (maybe GPS?)

I don't think there's anything conclusive except that some neat units, with cell phone capabilities, are coming out.

Has anyone heard about SD Wifi cards? that would at least solve some of the issues of not having it built in.

:D .. Well, I just got my early Christmas present.. The 5450.. This thing is freakin awesome ! I LOVE It.. I do have one small problem w/ mine though. Does not charge in the cradle  Charges via the adapter but just not in cradle. Looks like I'll be calling HP on monday for a replacement cradle. Other than that.. it rocks ... This is one of the major reasons I stick w/ HP/iPAQ for PDAs.. cann't beat their support and release of fixes / updates

Well, I just got mine a hour ago and haven't had any of the mention problems <thank you God>.

Although, I do have this issue, when I have it in the cradle and have wifi on and then try to sync, it gives me an error about not being able to sync out of date appointments. This also happens when I try to sync over wireless. It goes away, however, when I disable wifi.

The question is, why would a hard reset fix this? Had you installed something or changed some settings that would cause this problem? If so, you might end up with this problem again; if not, I don't understand the fix, because the device should come in a hard reset state from the factory.

Yeah, I was talking to the tech guy the entire time and I tried to reproduce hte problem. I reinstalled everything I had when I had the problem. And I also restored the same data, but that fixed the issue. The tech was stumpted and so was I...

Ah, the old "Hard Reset and Pray" the problem goes away approach. I hereby coin the acronym HRAP. :-)

Hmm, I think we need to make a list of terms invented here at PPCT. My invention a few months ago (one that the Gerbil adopted, btw) is "Foo-compliance". You can guess what that means. ;)

I might be able to guess -- but I'm not sure that I want to. :-D
