Why don't they have a sort function in WMP!??!
WMP is indispensible because of the WMA format for music takes up roughly half the space of MP3 format for the same sound quality. You can fit almost 4 hours' worth of music into a single 128MB SD card.
But not being able to get songs to play in order even when numbered without laboriously using up and down arrows to move songs around drove me nuts. I fiddled around until I had it worked out: the key is to copy files onto your PocketPC in the oder in which you want them played.
Of course, in their infinite wisdom, MS decided to change things in WMP 8.5, so I'll list both methods.
To Start:
You are going to drag and drop your files to your PPC using Windows Explorer on your desktop.
Sync your PocketPC and open up a Windows Explorer view into the destination directory on your PocketPC by using the "Explore" function in ActiveSync.
Open up the source directory on your desktop machine. Put the view into "Details" mode under the View Menu.
WMP 8.0 on PPC2002:
Sort the files into the order you want. For example, if you want to sort them alphabetically, select the "Name" bar at the top of the window.
Select the files you want to move.
Now the IMPORTANT part. With the files selected, click the FIRST (top) file in the list and drag and drop the files to your PocketPC folder. This last step is important because this will copy the files to your PocketPC in the order you have them sorted. If you don't select the first file, they won't be copied in order.
Now when you go to add files into a playlist in WMP on your PocketPC they will be added to the list (and therefore play) in order. Yay!
Changes in WMP 8.5 from EUU3:
Do things the same as with WMP 8.0 but you need to move the files to the PocketPC in the REVERSE order to the way you want them to play, i.e. sort the files so that they are in reverse alphabetical order and then select the last file (at the top) when you drag and drop.
Enjoy.
