My Axim should be arriving tomorrow. I already have AS 3.5 installed on a desktop running XP SP1. The first thing I want to do is to sync the Axim with the contacts and appointments I have on my desktop in Scheduler Plus. (Scheduler Plus came with Office 97. It can store contacts and appointments). I've been using Scheduler Plus with ActiveSync 3.5 as a place to hold Casio PIM info, since I never reference contacts or appointments from my desktop. I did not want to install Outlook on my desktop, since I use Outlook Express for email.

My intention is to do an initial sync with the Axim from the desktop. This will allow me to transfer the contacts and appointments from the Casio to the Axim. After that, I will by sync'ing the Axim with a Win2K laptop only, although I will want to backup the Axim to the desktop.

The Win2K laptop is my work PC. It has Lotus Notes, not Outlook. Eventually, I will install mNotes to sync up with the Axim's contacts and appoinments. mNotes uses ActiveSync.

Any advice? From what I've read here, sounds like I should un-install the current version of AS 3.5 and reinstall it from the Dell CD to get the right drivers. Anything else?

Found some good stuff on ActiveSync at

One thing I noticed was that MS has dropped support for Scheduler Plus after AS 3.1, but apparently it still works since I am currently using it with AS 3.5. Also got some good stuff on using Aventail VPN with AS.

Yes - honestly - consider installing Outlook, at least until you start using mNotes. It's a much better PIM than Schedule+, and you don't have to use it for email. It will not conflict with Outlook Express at all.

Schedule+ support will be vanishing before long, anyway, despite your success using it with AS 3.5.

If you still don't want to, approach the situation carefully. You don't want the Dell install to break your Schedule+ setup...

Yes, I certainly don't want to break Scheduler+. I need it to do the initial sync with the Axim. One thing that led me to believe I wouldn't have a problem was ActiveSync says it's using Outlook for contacts and appointments even though Scheduler+ sees the data. Apparently Scheduler+ and Outlook share some of the same databases.

But I agree, installing Outlook is probably the safest. If I install Outlook, will it find the contacts and appointments from Scheduler+?

OK. Installed Outlook 2000 from the Dell CD - told it not to do an import (Scheduler+ wasn't a choice), but it found the Scheduler+ contacts and appointments anyway as I had hoped.

Then I installed AS 3.5 from the Dell CD over an existing AS 3.5 install. It recognized there was a previous install, but I let it continue. After a reboot, connected the USB cable and got a message about a possible error from the "New hardware found" icon, but the connection icon in the system tray turned green anyway and the connection was established. I then told AS to sync the Axim with the desktop and all my contacts and appointments were quickly loaded in the Axim without a hitch.

Next step is to install mNotes and AS on a Win2K laptop running Nortel and Aventail VPNs. Here's where the fun will start. I'll follow-up later.

Glad to hear of your success. :) I can't remember Schedule+'s data formats anymore; I know Outlook creates a .PST file by default. You can check where it is by right-clicking the root of the folder tree, and looking at the Properties.

Good luck, let us know.

Need some advice with ActiveSync:

Success, sort off. Got the contacts, appointments and tasks transfered from my old PocketPC. Installed AS 3.5 from the Dell CD on a Win2k laptop running Aventail and Nortel VPNs, and Exceed Humingbird. Also synching Lotus Notes wih mNotes - and replaced the native PIM with Agenda Fushion. Its all working, although I meesed up the PIM databases, and lost a few appointments.

Could not have done it without Chiris De Harrera FAQs http://www.cewindows.net/faqs/t-shootactivesync.htm

If you are using Aventail, you will need to update its program exclusion list. You will also need to install a small free program called ReSync. Whenever the Axim is removed from the cradle, AS hangs on the laptop. ReSync kills AS on the laptop and automatically restarts it. No big deal really, considering all the problems folks have with a work computer and AS.
