Considering it has 64 MB of RAM, built-in WiFi, and a 400 mHZ XScale processor, that's <a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/stores/detail/-/electronics/B0000658CE/jasondunn-20">quite a device for $324!</a> (affiliate link)<br /><br /><img src="http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0000658CE.01.MZZZZZZZ.jpg" />

Ok, I've had it with you North Americans and your cheap prices. You get your PPC stuff so cheap, that it's not even funny anymore.
The prices are much cheaper to start with, and then there are all these rebates.
I just bought a second hand Toshiba e310 for $320. It's retailed here in Finland for $600. You don't want to know what they ask for e740
Overally the prices in Europe are pretty much the same as in North America, but PPC devices are a terrible exception. I just hope that you realise how good you have it there in PocketPC -wise

There certainly could be a market for someone over in the US to ship over some "grey import" Pocket PCs. You could make a reasonable mark-up and still give us Europeans a good deal. Especially as we get things LATER as well as paying more!

I already suggested that to Ed, sadly he rather spends his time and energy in bashing Palm instead of providing us with a service that would be quite lucrative for him

Yep, the e550G is also reduced at CompUSA stores...

399.99 after $50 instant, $50 Toshiba rebate, and $100 CompUSA rebate.

Well, we could just do it informally here. Just arrange with somebody to get one from CompUSA for you, mark it as a "gift" at the post office, and ship it to Finland; you could just pay one of us Yanks via PayPal, or whatever. I think if there's any organized setup, that there would be legal issues, but there's nothing illegal on our end about sending gifts to our beloved friends on the Continent!!
About this e740 deal - this is, basically, like an iPaq 3975 (but I think the screen isn't transflective, so sort of like a 3875 iPaq also), but with DUAL slots - pretty incredible price.
Now that i've played with the back-lit transflective PDAs, though, I really like the fact that they don't suffer from that "Parallex" problem (where it looks like you're writing "above" the screen, so at a slight angle, your stylus isn't where it seems..). With transflective (or any) back-lit screens, the touchscreen is right on top of the display, with no gap for lights, etc.
Still, if I didn't already have 2 V35s on order, and a strong desire for the thin/light PPC, I would totally get this.

I already suggested that to Ed
I can't say I'd want to bother either especially as anything too organised would, as Kirkaiya says, be awkward legally, but someone else may have more time.

There sure would be need for someone to provide cheap PPC's to Europe. If the price would be the same as in the States, the demand would be huge.
At the current price range they don't attract anyone but enthusiasts and are going to remain this way if the prices don't drop. And they really won't, I've been waiting for two years for the prices to drop even anywhere near to those that you have there.
Surely, with someone purchasing the device there and then supplying in PPC via mail to Europe would mean some diffuculties what it comes to warranty. But I guess it wouldn't really matter. With your price range one could just buy another device and still save money when compared to prices here.

Geez... no kidding!!
I live in Los Angeles but I currently work in Munich, Germany. I own an iPaq3835 which I bought for about $600. A month ago, you could get the 39xx for about the same from the US, but when passing through a tech store in Munich, the asking price was 1200 Euros!! 8O 8O 8O
For those that don't know, there's roughly a 1 to 1 exchange rate between dollars and Euros so that's translates evenly to $1200 for the 39xx!!
Now granted, the store was in an airport and airports are always overinflated, but still, twice the price!!??!!

Same here. I dont see the price of $324. Assuming the rebates are calcuated after the fact that gives you 499 - 100 - 50 = 349.

I do feel bad for you Europeans. I just purchased a Sony DSC-U20 digital camera, $243 USD final cost. I found it on websites in Europe selling for between $319-359 euro. Ouch.

This reminds me of the scene in boiler room where he gets the sales call from the news paper.
"So, basically everybody that bought this before me is getting screwed on this deal, right."
heh, Ohh well.

I can't help it. It really, really, really puzzles me how in the current world of free trade (between the industrialized parts) there can be such a huge difference in the prices. Someone's making a huge load of cash from between, but who? The toll? Government? Aliens, perhaps?

Is this a result of the VAT (Value Added Tax) that much of Europe seems to apply towards certain merchandise? In the states, the closest thing I can think of that we have is a "Luxery" tax on certain items, but that's mainly on Yahts, and privately owned jet aircraft, I think.
Not to drift toooo far off-topic, but if the issue is a tariff/VAT on certain imports, than any organized attempt to circumvent it would bring in the EU hounds... (i have no idea if they would apply it to individual gifts, though, or even how).

Nah, not just the VAT.
In the US listed prices are without taxes, over here its with taxes included, doesnt explain the difference tough.
I think the fact that manufacturers are required by law to give at least a ful year of warrantee has some influence as well as the tax and in some cases import tarrifs on technology.

At $325, this is even a better bargain than the Axim X5 :!: I would definitely go for it if I were considering the higher end Dell before, and lived in the US to take advantage of all rebates. The only to not take advantage of a killer deal like this is if you don't want WiFI, need more battery life, and want a transflective screen. Wish I had friends/relatives in the states

From all that I can tell, this offer is only available to those within the conitinental US. I even went to the online rebate registration and my Canadian model was refused. This week I'll get in touch with the West's Toshiba sales rep to see if seperate Canadian offer will become available or if the US one can be applicable.

But you do have friends in the US. All of your friends here, on the PockePC Thoughts message board...

wait, I thought Finland is next to Monaco, you know what they say everybody there lives like Kings and queens so they have to pay more than us poor people in places like say..... dixieland. :P
But seriously, I think it's a problem of distribution. I wonder why there is no such thing as Amazon.eu or something. a continental wide web seller. I bet they can make boat load of money in exchange for their effort by passing all the trade rules.
And the first country that welcome such company with low tax and less regulation will definitely experiance major economic boost. But then again, what do I know...
