Hi-PDA and Pocket PC Thoughts - It's All Good!

I know everyone loves the drama of conflict, so here's the final chapter: I just finished a 20-minute chat with Zhuyi, the Webmaster and owner of Hi-PDA. What happened was somewhat comical - it turns out that Zhuyi never received my email message or the form I filled out on his site. The webmaster@ email alias I sent my message to goes off into oblivion, and the contact form is broken and doesn't send him messages either. He contacted me once he saw the image, because he had no idea there was a problem.<br /><br />In his email to me, Zhuyi apologized for linking to my image - he says he did not know it was an issue. In our private chat we discussed the difference between linking to an image hosted by Socket Communications, and images hosted by enthusiast sites. Zhuyi wanted me to apologize on his behalf to Brighthand, infoSync, Pocket PC Passion, and any other enthusiast site out there that Hi-PDA has pulled images from. Zhuyi tells me that from now on he will download images and place them on his server, and always give credit and a link to the original image and/or story.<br /><br />I'm happy to report that Hi-PDA and Pocket PC Thoughts will be exchanging site buttons shortly, and I have an ally in the Asian PDA market. :D

Great to hear that you've managed to settle this issue amicably! Thank goodness you didn't try to send Kirkaiya's Babelfish translated version of your notice to zhuyi! It was horrible and wouldn't convey the message effectively. :wink: One word of advice, don't use Babelfish, still has a lot to be desired.

You are right, in his post on HiPDA, zhuyi mentioned that he didn't realise that linking your images would be an issue because he didn't know that your host charges you on bandwidth usage. I assume his host doesn't do that, hence the assumption on his part. :)

This issue is basically resolved~

The problem wasn't actually due to not being able to use their images but rather directly linking their images. That's because their web host charges them based on their bandwidth usage and will incur unneccesary costs. So, in the future, all I need to do to prevent similar issues from re-occuring is to host the pictures on my server and give them credit for it.

Also, I've exchanged banners with PocketPCThoughts :)


Hope that clarify things a bit...thank goodness he uses Simplified Chinese for his text or I'll really have some problems. :wink:

Babel fish is still one of the best general translation on the web. Specially the french and german. They actually make sense albeit some glitch. The eastern language are still giving us weird dada Poem return instead of half decent translation.

Google European language translation far behind in either translation quality or the number of language transliteration it can handle.

My guess is that Babelfish maintains its own set of language dictionaries and then literally does a word-for-word translation. The second level of intelligence would be to attempt to rearrange some of the words using basic knowledge of sentence structure.

In any case, I don't believe that these online translation services will be able to improve much beyond what they do now. Translating words is one thing but conveying thoughts is a something completely different.

No, that's definitely Chinese.

While I'm only a beginner at Japanese, I do know that written Japanese is a combination of Kana (Hiragana & Katakana which are both phonetic-based alphabets) and Kanji (Chinese-based character set).

There is no Kana anywhere in the message which would be highly unusual if this was written in Japanese.

It's usually a bad bet to better against possiblities in the long term (I believe that, eventually, most translation will be done by machine, as neural-network machines, etc, continue their exponential power increases).

That is true. Computers intelligence will continue to grow in leaps and bounds, but there is a difference I think between Chess and language interpretation. In Chess, you can logically plot out all the possibilities... what makes it challenging is that the number of "branches" grow exponentially with each possible maneuver and the computer must sort through these huge exponential number of possibilities in a fixed time period.

With language, there is often no defined logic. Much is "implied" as opposed to calculated. For example, in Japanese, there is no lexical differentiation between "guest" and "customer" (the same word is used for both), but the concept is obviously different depending on the circumstance.

It's often hard enough for us posters not to misinterpret eachother's written English on this board and I'd say most of us are native English speakers. It would be even more difficult for a machine to 1) correctly interpret the meaning of a message and then 2) correctly translate that message into a an entirely different language.

I think we'll continue to see leaps and bounds by computers in many areas. I just don't think language interpretation and translation will be one of them.

While it won't be done soon, I have no doubt that machine translation will be done eventually. At worst, you have to design a computer with a brain similar to ours and then teach it like we teach children. That's not easy, but the only thing that can stop us from doing it eventually will be our morality and laws -- should machines be allowed to think, and, if they are, what rights will they have?
