I personally think all these different forums on different sites are a pain.
Good discussions end up scattered over many different web sites, and are often missed, difficult to remember which one to follow up on, etc.
Usenet has been around for ages, and their are appropriate groups (including the microsoft.* ones) for discussion from the whole community 'all in one place'. This makes it easy to discuss with a large audience and search across the whole set of newsgroups with a simple search at googlegroups.com, for example. I've been using usenet for a long time now, and it has been a great resource.
I realise that many folks can't get to some newsgroups that easily for various reasons (ISP's etc.), and thats where the value of some of the web based discussion boards, such as this one, have become valuable. Good webforums become 'useful' by being on sites with focused content and high traffic.
The fact is, everyone and their dog seem to want to host a forum. Sooner or later there will be more forums than people to post to them!
I'd actually prefer sites have a 'web view' of usenet forums, rather like Mircosoft do with theirs.
Ahh, I feel better now!
