View Full Version : So I Started a New Job Today...

http://www.softspb.com/press/pressr...2002/dec04.html

I started a new job today, and it will have an impact on this site and potentially how you view my work on it, so I wanted to be completely up-front about this so no one can accuse me of hiding anything...because there's always someone who will try to.

As of today, I'm the new Vice President of Marketing for Spb Software House. :D The link above goes to the press release. I'm really excited about this for a few reasons: they're a very talented group of coders who have churned out some excellent applications in the past year, and I'm going to have an opportunity to represent their work in the community. I have a lot of ideas for ways in which software companies can work with enthusiast sites, so if you are a Webmaster for a Pocket PC site, you'll likely be hearing from me in the next few weeks. It's also quite a thrill to have a job where I can leverage my Pocket PC knowledge and pay my heating bill at the same time. Cool!

I'm going to have input into application features as well, and will be acting as a product manager of sorts for their Palbum line of products. I'm a digital media geek, as most of you know, so the opportunity to create the ultimate digital media tool is very appealing. That way when I complain about it missing a feature, I'll have no one to blame but myself.

What will this change on Thoughts? Not much. Spb understands that by hiring me they're not "hiring" Thoughts in any way, and we'll continue to run it as before. My goals in this regard are two-fold:

• Spb news will be posted on by someone other than me.
• Spb software reviews will be written by our reviewer team - not me.

If I do post on Spb news, say a new release of an application that I helped create, you'll know it - I won't pretend that I'm an impartial observer. In fact, I'll likely be asking for feedback from you on Spb products now and then - feedback is never lacking from Thoughts readers, and if you're willing to give it, I'm willing to listen.

So there you have it. What do you think?
Mr. PPC

I think it is great that you have been dragged off the street and into an office. :-)
Congrats on the new job.

Let me be the second to congratulate you, and I agree SPB has some awesome talent. I personally feel you will be ethical and do not see any reason for anyone else to feel otherwise. Good luck and I wish you the best in your new endevour. BTW I don't have a heating bill, just a perk of living in AZ
Congrats on the new job!!!

As well, congrats on the new job.
Very interesting (ironic, weird) that you start a new marketing job the same day we (at thoughts) discover a marketing blunder with the Viewsonic memory. Set the marketing world straight Jason....go get em

Jason,
Some folks just like to complain. They complain about having nothing to complain about. Having a job allows one to pay their bills. It does not necessarily compromise their integrity.
You have done a tremendous job with this site. Congratulations on your promotion. I'm sure you will do just fine.

:!: CONGRATS! :!:
I appreciate the full disclosure very much - it's great that you have taken the time to make sure everything is aboveboard. I strongly applaud the measures you've put in place with the Spb news postings and reviews coming from team members other than yourself, as that makes me confident I can continue to rely on Pocket PC Thoughts for unbiased coverage on all PPC applications, including those by Spb.
Best of luck with your new endeavor!

As a deveolper, I know what it's like to get the 'perfect' job that mixes your talents and your interestes into one. I know that I'm always looking for the next contract, and trying to talk clients into doing some dev on the PPC platform. Then I can play around all day AND get paid. :D

A Pocket PC advocate and an enthusiast teams up with a company that creates great Pocket PC software. Hmm... should this be the new Websters definition of "win-win"
Congratulations, Jason. Well deserved.
We have quickly developed a very nice relationship with the folks over at Spb. It can only get better now. :D

It is always good to see people get a job that will really enjoy, and benefit others!!!
The people at SPB are great and I am sure you will fit right in!!!
You are definitely one of the hardest working people in the PocketPC Community and I am sure your work ethic will carry over nicely at SPB.
I will put a plug in for spb. The have some very informative developer sites that they run. One is for the PocketPC and one for the Smartphone. If you are a developer check 'em out...
PocketPC Developer Network (http://www.pocketpcdn.com/)
Smartphone Developer Network (http://www.smartphonedn.com/)
Again, Congratulations Jason!!! :D

Congratulations, Jason. Isn't it great to have a job where they pay you for your addiction? As I like to say, it's like them giving you crack cocain and then paying you for taking it! 8O
Just remember one thing, you still have a wife and a home, spend some time there.
Good luck

Happy for you. Post whatever you want. We're not a bunch of ninnies that think you are the all knowing God, we always take what you say and think for ourselves. You just happen to be right most of the time.
Thanks for being up front about it all. And I think they landed a real expert in the field, congrats.

Great way to sum it up. We don't claim to be consumer reports. Jason still has, after 3-4 face lifts of the site, "Daily News, Views, Rants and Raves" in the title. We do our best to tell it like it is - from the V35 issues to Orange SPV lockdowns Andy just posted on and try to have fun at the same time.
The "ninnies" might disagree though.

Sorry if this has come up already in the thread, but when you get there, would you please crack the whip on them to make the SPB full screen keyboard word flawlessly with the XDA?
Thanks!

You never know. But, like all good marketing people, I can't discuss unreleased products.
"'It's not a bug; it's a feature.'"
If I ever say that, you have my permission to give me a good public trashing. What I might say, however, is "It's not a bug, it's a design decision."
"How are you going to deal with the commute to work?"
Spb is in Russia, but I'll do what I've always done: work from my computer. :D

I think one thing that all human beings have in common is that we all complain about bills - even millionares will complain about taxes. ;-)
