Astute readers will notice that there are now ten posts on the opening page - it's a stop-gap measure to reduce our server load, but we may integrate a few more features to make it easy for you to browse back to the previous block of ten posts, and still make the opening page load faster. The site was also down this evening for a while, making it the fourth time today. Amazing. Who knew one site could crash so often? I think I should get an award...

All we need to do now is to get you posted on Slashdot. You'll never come back up--the machine will have melted into a puddle.

Well, the funny thing is that we've been Slashdotted several times - but not since we moved to this new layout in September. Our previous server and layout could handle it. If it happened now, yeah, the server would die within seconds.

To further reduce the server load you should buffer the front page to a file and then just print out a pre-rendered story list and other ones. Such method saves A LOT of server time - believe me, I know.
Second - generate http headers for w3cache servers and the browsers so they know if the page has changed and they render locally cached data instead of requesting it from your server. That especially goes for all the photos - there are some nice things you can do in a .htaccess file placed in a picture directories on the server.

Thank god you aren't using any Microsoft product to serve the site or we'd have 500 posts on how bad Microsoft sucks.

That's the thing about open source - when it breaks there's no one to blame!

As there are now 14 posts on the main page, and you have that posting about image links, does that mean the 10 post limit has been rescinded?

I hope so, because ten posts seems too small, especially if there are more than ten posts on a given day. Of course, I'm not paying for the bandwidth. :-)
