If you like the Toshiba design, this might be the device you were looking for - although I have to wonder if it's worth the $100 premium it is over the Dell Axim X5.

• Pocket PC 400Mhz
• 64MB RAM 32MB ROM
• 3.5" TFT Color Display
• SD & CF Expansion Slots USB Cradle

Attempt to compete with Dell? but like you said... that $100 difference doesn't seem very competitive and with Dell's coupons and such... I dunno. Come on Toshiba, let's see what the e750 can do.

well technically speaking, the dell is 350 w/o the current rebates... but i guess consumers won't look at it that way...

I think this is priced fairly well considering in a month when the rebate for dell will probably expire, this will be only 50 bucks more. It's smaller, made of metal, and has both slots on top (advantage for me at least). Plus, although i haven't held the dell yet, i'm willing the bet the joypad is better on the toshiba... (minus the software problems). Anyway, since the dell also offers 16mb of more rom and a much better screen, this thing might not sell to hot...

Well the Dell's screen isn't too much better, since (from what I hear) it's at the lower-end of the transflective screen spectrum (as far as quality goes) and the e740's screen is at the higher-end of the reflective screen spectrum (as far as quality goes). But I'm sure the Dell's is better. :)

Also don't forget that the e740 can host USB devices (via expansion pack or cable) and has an SD I/O slot - two things the Dell doesn't have.

Makes me wonder what the second LED (the right-hand one) is used for the e740NW. On the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth versions, this LED lights to show that the radio is on. (You can tell it's a boring day when that's all I have to wonder about. :))

Hmm...an e740 sans wireless. I thought that was the whole point of the e310/330 series? :?

Those aren't dual slot like the e740.

There's actually a $100 rebate on the e740 from Toshiba starting Dec. 6... I'm not sure if it applies to this "NW" version too. If so, that makes it pretty much the same price as the Dell.

Tohiba's also got a $50 rebate on the e740 expansion pack (so after rebate, it comes out to $20-$40).
Thy must be clearing out to get ready for the e750 coming early next year (rumored) I guess....

I think Costco just hasn't lowered the price for the E740.

I bought mine for $379 a couple months back with 802.11b. I was going to have Staples price match it but they took too long.

It's just like CDW, they are still charging $599 for the E740 with 802.11b last time I looked.

If I am correct Costco's return policy is " when ever" or one year.
Please advise if this is correct. If this is correct you can return it when new PockerPC's come out and keep upgrading with the same money.

I just call Costco and they advise me that computers and laptops can be returned with in 6 months and everything else is anytime with receipt and packaging. When is anytime? one year, two years?
Does this make sense, if so keep upgrading.

Also, don't forget that the Dell will have a keyboard option. I know there's a Toshiba keyboard out there, but if Dell partners with ThinkOutside for a Stowaway, that would be a big reason to steer clear. That's pretty much the only thing that kept me from buying the e740.

The Toshiba can use a normal USB keyboard with either the Expansion Pack or a $30 USB Host dongle. No need to spend the big bucks for a Stowaway.

I've been doing months of research when I decided to make the move from Palm to the Pocket PC. All of my research pointed to the Palm e740 and the Dell Axim. Wireless was not important to me, however, price, size, speed and expansion were.

The day before I ordered the Axim, I walked into our local Costco and the e740NW sold for $299.99. The (3) COSCTOs on Oahu and (1) on Maui all had the same price.

I already did the research and new that the e740 (with the wireless) had great reviews, so it was a no brainer.

I've read in the past that because the way the recorder button is situated on the Toshiba, that often people would activate the recorder by mistake. I've done it once and only once. Easy to avoid.

Finally with the $300.00 I saved from purchasing the e750, I can buy a 802.11 B flash card for $60 and a 128 Mb secured digital card for $45, and I'll still would have saved $200 if I had bought the e750.

Oh, does anyone one know where I could purchase an aluminum case for my Toshiba?

Aloha,

BigCofMauui

Congrats on the e740NW. Check out the cases at The Pocket Solution. (http://www.thepocketsolution.com/)

Ahhhh - alll these cheap prices over there in the States are just making me as jelous as hell!

I am in the same situation as BigCofMaui was - deciding between a Dell X5 Advanced and a Toshiba e740. Unfortunately here in Euro land even the now supperseeded e740 is still selling for around €600 (US$650) while I can get a Dell with the optional Wireless card for under €500 (US$544). As for the e750 (which would be my choice is cost were not a factor!) don't even ask...

You guys really are spoilt for choice!
