Its a sad day...ok, I reformatted my computer, and now I can't get the my Toshiba e740 to connect. I can't find my Toshiba CD so I downloaded the USB drivers from the Toshiba website. It installs fine, but basically, when I cradle it, nothing happens, nothing at all. The 'Toshiba' device is installed, but ActiveSync refuses to see the device. Any suggestions? I've done this a thousand + times, but now I'm stuck. :x

What version of Windows? If you go into "Device Manager" on the PC, are there any problems with USB?

Ive got the same problem - or at least a similar one. I just got my e740 today. When I plugged it in I believe the drivers installed correctly, but activesync freezes and hangs during installation when it says "looking for pocketpc". ANy thoughts?

I had the same problem as you did on 3 computers. I found out that the drivers on toshiba website just don't work with my systems. I had to use the one that came with my CD.

1. Plug in your pda.
2. Go to Device manager and remove Pocket PC device
3. Unplug pda
4. Uninstall your active sync
5. Get CD and install active sync
6. plug in pda
7. Hardware wizard will detect new device
8. Use driver from CD
9. Upgrade active sync to 3.6

This is the only way I was able to get mine to work by following this process.

Holy crap. You're absolutely right. I can't believe this :( .

Seriously Toshiba get your act together. Tried it with:

AS 3.6, web driver: no work
AS 3.6, CD drivers: no work
as 3.5 (from cd), CD drivers: works

that is the most lame ass crap (pardon my french) I've ever seen! Get it together Toshiba!

The new USB driver wont work when installing from scratch for me either (not even trying activesync). Im using an ECS K7S5A - perhaps its an issue with the usb implementation/chipset in the new drivers? This issue really should be explored further. I dont like the fact that if I lose this CD I'll never be able to get my PPC working again

anyone have a copy of the drivers from the CD for the e330..not sure where my cd is, but I have a copy of activesync 3.5. I reformatted, and cannot connect, when I plug the ppc in, it is prompting me to install the device, and needs drivers.

btw, I'm using W2K.

I got a new WinXP laptop at work and I downloaded the Toshiba USB drivers and found that if I paid attention that the install finished with an error message about a bad service install point in the inf file or something I read in that light. I was impatient and did not have my original install CD. I did a little randomly dangerous research and I exported the ‘wceusbsh’ section under My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ from the registry of my old WinXP laptop. I then imported that registry file into the registry of the new laptop and manually copied the wceusbsh.sys file to the system32\drivers\ location as indicated in the wceusbsh service section from my registry. I then went into device manager and used the reinstall option for the USB drivers for the e740. It then worked for me. Of course you should never do as I do and hack the heck out of your registry on your new laptop when you really have no clue how dangerous you really are. I just really needed to sync my PDA, right?

The better option is to get your hands on your original install CD.

I also was able to sync my e740 over the IR port of the laptop without any Toshiba drivers installed, but that was not good enough for me, so I went ahead and hacked my registry. If I knew what I was doing I figure I could actually have fixed the install script in that inf file, but that would be doing Toshiba’s work for them.

BTW, I was using ActiveSync 3.5 on the old and had installed 3.6 on the new. The issue seems to be totally with the install process of the Toshiba USB drives aviable on their web site. I hope they can find it in their hart to fix it.

Thanks…
Dave

Here is a text export of that section of my registry, I am not sure if you can import this or not and I would not recomend that you do import it even if you can, unless you want to do it at your very own risk. At any rate the lines between the rows of *** are what was in the test.txt file that I exported from my registry. What I basically did was install the Toshiba drivers as they instructed then imported registry file and copied the wceusbsh.sys file to the system32\drivers\ folder and then used the device manager's reinstall option for the e740. But what ever you do; do not do what I did.

PS: I modified the Data value of the Security Key as I do not know how important it is to keep secure. I noticed that other serives in the services section of my registry seemed to have the same Data value for the Security Keys. Just an FYI.

I saw a posting on other news group addressing the problem of XP not recognizing the e740 using USB cable.
The solution is
1) uninstall the e740 problem device from device manager
2) copy WCEUSBSH.SYS (usually is in "..\windows\driver cache" directory) to c:\windows\system32\drivers
3) dock the pda
4) let the OS do the searching of the driver. it should find it and install it properly.
there is no reason for uninstalling and reinstalling of ActiveSync, at least for me.

Hope this helps.
