According to a thead at AnandTech.com, if you buy a Dell Axim at a kiosk, you get the normal $50 rebate plus an instant $50 off! So the $249 and $349 Axims become $149 and $249. If you have a <a href="http://www.dell.com/directstore">Dell kiosk near you</a> it may be worth checking out before placing an online order.<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/hansberry/2002/20021127-dellkiosk.jpg" /><br /><br /><b>Update:</b> I just got a message from Michael Gordon, one of the other Microsoft MVPs that supports the Pocket PC. He confirmed this deal exists. Home users may also be able to get a 10% discount as well. I have seen other posts where the Dell people at the kiosk don't know anything about this extra $50. So, print this post out and take it with you as proof! <i>"Look Dell Dude, Ed <b>and</b> Michael said it was a valid deal, now, gimme the X5."</i>

Beat that palm!! Hell, I am going to buy one just as a backup! (oh wait, I am not in the US... I would if I where there)

{edited link out - don't post links that can cause an irreversable loop. I had to kill iexplore.exe in Task manager, which killed another window. Not funny at all. -Ed}

Hope we never see that on a pocketpc!!

I clicked it before you edited it out and I didn't get stuck in a loop.

I stopped by the Dell kiosk at the Galleria mall in Dallas last night and the lead rep told me the $50 off coupon rules had changed on 11/26. The $50 off coupon is now only good for purchases over $500. :(

The rules changed on 11/26?!? Let's all beat the snot outta the Dell Dude!

(Not because of the rule change. Just 'cause he deserves it. :D )

Is there anywhere on the Dell website that lists kiosk locations? I've been looking around and can't find anything. :?

Anyone know if there is a keyboard out yet for the Axim?

I'm a Brit stuck here in Germany (you know, Europe? - where everyone still uses a horse and cart) and don't want a German language PDA, but would love to get my hands on a US X5.

Dell have a stupid policy here of shipping everything from Ireland with over-inflated shipping prices ( laptop shipping costs $75!!!!!). So I'm guessing the price of a X5 PDA will cost 50% extra (Dell's normal policy) plus huge (lets say) $40 shipping => US $415 for the 300Mhz model !!!!!

Couldn't some (reliable) enterprising person buy us some X5s, test them and then ship them out here??? They could still make a massive profit, compared to Dell's prices here. How does $300 sound for the $250 model? What a profit margin...

I hate Dell. Think of those huge subsidies they got for setting up in Ireland. You'd think they'd pass on the savings to the user! (okok wishful thinking).

Gimme justice.

Cool, called my local mall Kiosk and the guy said the extra $50 off is in all stores, and when I asked how long this offer will last he said Dec. 12. I better cancel my online preorder before they actually ship it though...

BUT, my 10% Dell Home Systems email coupon says it's expired Nov 25th (couple of days ago), so I don't know how Ed is saying it can be combined...

Only the one you can buy on Dell's site, and I don't think that's even around yet. Adding one to my order delayed expected shipment until 7 JAN. (I ordered late on the 18th.)

This is probably old news by now, but I called all of the Dallas area Dell Direct stores this morning - and the deal is off. I was told that it was actually a mistake - that the $50 off was never supposed to apply to the Axim. The new "deal" is $50 off any purchase over $500 - including a purchase of an Axim. Of course, many lucky individuals were in the right place - at the right time - but not me :x

So, the only way to make this happen now is grab your buddy, order 2 Axims (one has to be 400MHZ to reach the $500) and enjoy a $25 price break each. Or you could order the Bluetooth card along with the Axim...

Man, if I just would have seen this one-day earlier...

Even at $200, an entry level Pocket PC is a good deal. The only down side is that most consumers will either not know it's even available or won't buy it cause they can't touch and feel the unit.

Since I took over my store and put PDA's on display instead of having one token unit in a drawer behind the counter, our PDA sales have increased 8 times. People like to touch and feel these things. Corporate sales may be fine -- some IT guy somewhere buys one, puts it through its paces and then orders 500 at a time. Still a touch and feel purchase, but better metrics on the experience.

Price will drive purchasers that are willing to go online or to the phone to buy, but a lack of retail presenece for Dell units will hurt them in the consumer market near term.

BTW, the Palm m500 is now $149...

I will predict, that with this cool deal, and the deals on the Maestros of last Spring and Toshiba e310s of the Summer, setting the $150-200 price range in consumers minds it will be tough to sell to savy on-line buyer at anything above $300 soon even for the very high end Ipaqs. It is too transparent that Compaq has been making huge profits on them.

By Spring when the next version of PPC OS is confirmed to not run at all on the h1910, I expect we will be able to get the low-end Axim, Toshiba e330s, or ViewSonics for $150 each. Take your pick.

It'll be a painful wait this Christmas season knowing that all these are coming but not getting them, but the Spring will be a PDA buyers dream date.

I went to the mall today to go see the new Dell Axim, and I got some bad news and some good news. The good news is, at least in my opinion, the pda seems like a GREAT device, especially the screen. The screen is nice and bright and isn't sidelit. I looked at the information chart they had sitting there alongside the unit and cradle, and it said the screen is transFLECTIVE. NOT transREflective. What does is the difference without going into too much detail? I also liked how you can have different settings for the processor (I know this may not be new for you xscale device owners, but i'm coming from a ipaq 3635  ). I would load songs and games, etc. on the Axim but I don't have an SD card or SD slot on my ipaq so I wasn't able to test it out other than with the applications that were already installed. But it is a nice lightweight device, without the need of sleeves. This device has got me "excited" :P enough that I may switch to the Axim and just replace all my PCMCIA accessories for CF accessories. I even showed the representative a little something.

Important: I talked to the representative working there at the kiosk, and she said that that extra $50 off, ended yesterday (26th), and that she didn't know if they would have that offer again. She said they only tell her about the deals every wednesday or so and the deal(s) run for about a week. So beware people who are considering cancelling their online orders of the Axim to take advantage of the extra $50 off, make absolutely sure the offer is still good before purchasing.

If you get a chance to go see the new Axim, go see it, it's really a great looking device. I give this device two thumbs up. I just have to wait until the foldout keyboard is available for it, etc. (around January?).

it said the screen is transFLECTIVE. NOT transREflective.
Transflective is a combination of transmissive and reflective. The latter term is just a slightly longer variation.

Most color handheld screens fall into three categories:

- Transmissive - Casio E125, Visor Prism, Palm IIIc
- Reflective - iPaq 36/37/3800, Palm m505, 515, Tungsten
- Transflective - iPaq 1910/3900/5450, Dell Axim, Viewsonic
