That is so clever, cute, and small. I don't even want a cell phone and I want one.

bet it's ages (if ever) before we those here in North America. I think we'd all die of shock if AT&T or VoiceStream or T-Mobile introduced a cool looking phone...

Yeah - for the US they'd have to double the size just so we wouldn't go into shock. They certainly wouldn't want us to actually drool over a phone here in the US! But why should they - Us Americans are so easy to please with the addition of a few extra melodies, ring tones or maybe even blue lights! I guess they expect us to be: "Oooh wow, My phone can play a few Midi files and look at the neato colors on this brick!" Give me a break (and an interesting form factor over here) :2gunfire: !

Nice enough, but I'm not actually sure if it offers any real advantages over the T68i - the hardware specs look very similar (unless I've missed something obvious, which is definitely a possibility!). I only wish that it was an MS Smartphone. At that size, that would make it ultra-cool... :)

By the way, here are some good links:
* Loads'a pics! (http://www.siemensinfo.de/gallerys55.htm)
* Tech specs (http://www.siemensinfo.de/techdatas55.htm)

The above links are in German, so for the specs, you might to want to use Babelfish (http://babelfish.altavista.com/) (although it's pretty simple to work out what's what!).

Uh, that's a nice phone, but it's not the one in this article.

I'm sure you knew that though

Hmm... these pics are different then the ones from the original post. Am I missing something here? Are they both S55... maybe different revisions or something.

These pictures are for the S55 which was already announced. The SL55 is a brand new phone. From my limited Czech knowledge, it looks like the the SL55 will have the same features as the S55 (meaning 3-band, Bluetooth etc) and it will be announced 11/25.... but I could be wrong.

(the darned thing sure looks yummy at that size. I wonder if wireless will ever start becoming too small)

Who needs a BT headset, just clip on an ear hook to this phone and hang it on your ear

Unless you have the BlueSpoon, that is...

^ Wow is that right? The other pics show this SL55 not that much narrower than other cellphones, but

http://www.isis.de/members/~mploetner/sl55/sl55_x04.jpg

shows that the length of the SIM card takes up most of the width of the phone??

OK, I'm going to throw out my standard "small stuff" spiel, feel free to ignore if you're so inclined.

First, do you really want a phone this small. Keep in mind how far the mic. is from you're mouth, and if it has the range to pick you up from that distance it's probably picking up a bunch of other stuff too!

Second, I still remain convinced that people (even if they don't know it) want thin, not short. If you look at you're pants pocket I think you'll find most items lie side by side meaning thin is a lot more useful. Plus, if you have short things you have to stack them on top of eachother which makes it more likely they will fall out when you sit down (except for women, who get to carry purses (I'm very jealous))

Third, I'm sorry, but no one is going to know what it is and you're going to look like you're talking into an easter egg (which most people don't associate with "sane") and I ask you, if you saw someone talking into an easter egg would you go up to them and ask why, or just walk on and think they are a wacko?

That's what I thought...

It wouldn't be much worse than people walking around now using hands-free sets on their phones. I keep seeing people talking to themselves, or I keep thinking the person is addressing the room, but when I get closer I see the little cord going to the earbud....

Mic too far from mouth, eh? :) http://www.mobilsiden.dk/mobildebat.dk/debat1/discus/messages/1/8025.jpg

A lot of people are excited about a jawbone version of BlueSpoon (no background noise), but Nextlink has no concrete plans to offer one anytime soon, so you'll have to make do with this model w/ a standard mic.

But see, the only reason you didn't think those people are crazy is because you knew what they were talking into. The Easter egg is a wildcard :)

That being said I thank god for Hands Free sets, there's nothing better than seeing someone you don't want to talk to coming towards you, reach in your pocket, hold your cell. phone in your hand and just start talking into thin air...great trick and has saved me from many an uncomfortable situation.

I can't believe you said you like the way it looks :)

I don't know, it still seems to me someone talking to you from the side would get picked up just as well, but if it works, it works.

As for the jawbone thing...I don't know, I think I personally will hold off on that...at least until I find that the early adopters havent developed toothaches, cavities, cancer, etc...

Nextlink has A LOT of satisfied customers of their commercial/industrial jawbone corded headsets (just ask the Secret Service and all those other agencies). Full details at www.nextlink.to as I recall. Heck you can already buy other jawbone specialty deskphones (though I'm not sure they use exactly the same technology?)...

It's not like "jawbone" means direct linkup inside your mouth to your jaw :D

In regards to standard mic, unidirectional filters work wonders I guess. Ask any owner of a short candybar cellphone...

I love this thing - clever design (a la Sharp Zaurus and the Palm Tungsten), but in a much cuter package!

I also like that they managed to put a color screen into a phone so small - some of those big MSFT-based smartphones are a little chunky.

This thing is just so cute, like a big jelly-bean - my wife wants one already (luckily for me, they're not available here yet - my wallet sighs in relief!).

Anyway - glad to see some innovation in the phone market still. Does anybody have any info on if or when this will make it to our fair shores? (and to the rather less-than-fair Sprint PCS network?).

Anyway - I like how it looks, especially that it doesn't look like every other identical little samsung/LG/Motorola flip-phone I've seen lately.

Heh, yeah I remember! But you can't use that if you have your teeth permanently coated by your dentist (so that you never have to brush your teeth) -- I also remember reading about this, too...

Anyways, looks like this tooth phone uses jawbone resonance to transmit sound into your inner ear (i.e. replaces the speaker part). OTOH Nextlink's jawbone reads your speech from jawbone vibrations (i.e. replaces the microphone), so it's the opposite...? All interesting...

You know, eventually the phones will just be a tiny chip implanted under our skin, and the display will hook into a cortical implant... When it rings, you'll just see a floating "heads-up display" type image (which nobody but you can see, of course), and you can mumble quietly to yourself, and your jawbone sensor will pick it up, clean up the sound, correct your grammar, and send it on as your voice

This thing would be just pefect for me if it had a more advanced OS like SmartPhone in it, the future holds cool things indeed :D

I'm pretty sure the big slot there is for an MMC card. If you look just under to the left of the slot you can see an area that looks more like a SIM card slot. Looks to me like it maybe folds open for you to insert the SIM.

Could be wrong, though.
