View Full Version : Why'd you pick your avatar?

Avatars have been one of the great features added to webboards in the last few years. This site is no exception, and I've noticed a lot of avatars; some of them make obvious sense, and others don't.

So, why'd you pick your avatar?

Let me start with myself: I started playing with computers around 3 with a Timex Sinclair (anyone remember that?). I "graduated" to a Commodore around 4, and we had our first PC clone shortly thereafter (an Eagle PC, does anyone remember that? ;)) The PC was one of the first units I actually did serious work on. In fact I did some simple word processing consulting for friends and relatives on the PC before I was in high school (even then, there were all those people that said "how do I print" :P) So, I set my avatar as a PC to represent the amount of time I spent with them.

What's scary is, we probably have one or two still-working original PC 5150's in the attic somewhere. Admittedly, I don't use one anymore ;)

I like cats. :)

Kati, what does that oval have to do with cats? Looks like an egg. (Just in case: Avatar refers to your picture, not your alias.)

My avatar is simple enough... a self pic doodle in a P-chat board that stuck. Captures the disgruntled look well and gives an appropriate scowl to whatever I happen to be ranting about.

Hmm. I should change the contrast then. It's an abstract of a sleeping cat.

Hmm... now that you mention it... yeah! I see it. I thought for sure it was a cracked egg.

EDIT: (don't really want to flood with posts... hoping more people will post about their pics too) -- Yeah, that looks better. :D The background looks like a rug/blanket or something now too, not just color.

Mine is a story told many times:

I saw one I liked, so I stole it. 8)

Actually, I asked the person who had it if they'd mind me using it as well. They didn't so I did.

Don't feel bad... it took me a minute, staring at it and knowing the cat reference, to get it--even with the new background. Kati, nice & subtle...

No, no, you "adopted" it ;)

Seriously, someone on PDABuzz built a "yawn" avatar modeled after the Palm logo. It was quite the popular avatar back then. I think Jonathan (PocketPCPassion Jonathan) had it for a while...

I use my avatar to show my current Pocket PC in case nobody checks out my profile. :) I started with a large photo of the front of the e740, masked out the area bordering it, as well as the screen area, so that it was kinda like an e740 "shell." That way, I can position the e740 over whatever background I like, and with the screen area essentially wide open, I can replace it with just about anything, be it a screenshot of my favorite Pocket PC Web site, or something more personal.

To finish the effect, I distort the image so it looks as though the e740 is tilted back and get the "floating" effect by adding a shadow underneath. For the avatar here at Thoughts, I added a gradiant background that fades from one forum background color to the other so that it looks okay against either one. (I got that idea from PDA Gerbil (http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/profile.php?mode=viewprofile&u=2419)'s avatar.) I create various sizes of each avatar for use on various forums that have different size requirements for their avatars.

Photoshop rules! Sorry for the overly-verbose answer. ;)

Photoshop rules! Sorry for the overly-verbose answer. ;)
You shouldn't be sorry :D It's a nicely-photoshopped avatar. I used Photoshop for mine, but just for some very minor cropping and image resizing. If I had time, I'd mask out the PC, put a nice little shadow, and do the PDA-Gerbil-background-trick(tm), which I agree with you was neat (although he took it one step further -- the blue background switches back and forth on his...)

I was going to do something like that but didn't want to get sued for patent infringement. Besides, it's a much more subtle effect with his avatar since there is less background showing; I think it would be distracting on mine to have the colors flip around like that.

It's how I feel, and some say, how I look. Goes with the tag line too (if you haven't watched the animation). Any one remember the cartoon?

P.S. I got the cat all on my own. Course I have two of them and that position is very familiar.

Great thread guys! I picked Wolverine for two reasons:

1) I collected comics for many years, and X-Men was one of my favourite comics. And hey, Wolverine is Canadian. 8)

2) Sometimes I have a temper problem like the little beserker...

I like cigars. When I started playing First Person Shooters, tried to come up with a non-obscene alias.

I liked Cohiba. Once I had that, I resized an image of Demi More from Cigar Aficiando smoking. Thought it looked cool.

The Phat is a reference to spending too much time infront of a computer and not enough time outside ;)

I used ImageReady which is PhotoShops animation program counterpart. All in all the av took about 3 hours to get it fine tuned to the one you're seeing. It's a third generation. The first two has fewer falling pieces. It took so long because I had to create it frame by frame.

I also made a pong avatar but the owner of my other board said it was locking up his PC. LOL Next will be the old atari pit fall. (Been saying that for months and haven't done it yet. THAT will be a project!:()

BlueRocket comes from my car, VW GTI VR6. It's Blue. And it's sometimes called a PocketRocket (because of it's size and power) Hence, BlueRocket.

Now, the picture is of a newer model, the GTI 25th Aniversery model. However, I've been thinking of updating the image to the new R32. 8)

I don't see it, but I've always loved your avatar. Didn't you write the Pac-Man emulator that everyone got when the iPaq first came out? And/or wrote the only emulator to use in-game stylus taps to move the galaga/pac-man?

Of course, my avatar's supposed to look like me. I used Imageready to give it a little life of it's own. Kinda like he's just hanging out, and occasionally reading a post or two. All my college buddies have an avatar, too. (http://www.drearyrainbow.com/ninjas.html)

It's true actually. As a fellow Canadian, I saw Jason's Wolverine and thought that was pretty cool seeing as they both are from Alberta (and perhaps both involved in Military experiments). Lovable monkey AiAi from Nagoshi´s Gamecube masterpiece Super Monkeyball.
Nagoshi is head of one of the Sega satelite teams and is responsible for such classics as Daytona USA (his first great project handed to him before he had his own team and was working for Yu Suzuki´s AM2 satelite) Spikeout digital battle and Super monkeyball.
The guy is so good that Nintendo actually handed him the FZero liscence so you have a Sega company producing a Nintendo game.

My avatar.. now *that* has a fascinating story attached..

I work in Cybertown, a very large community chat site devided into neighbourhoods. I worked in the Star Trek neighbourhood as a Block Deputy then; [today, i'm the NL] and there was this contest.. your face + star trek; go nuts. Best picture wins. I won first prize.

So I fired up the webcam, took a shot of my face, surfed to startrek.com, found a suitable picture, and an hour of PSP7 editing later, a picture was born. It still greets visitors on my 2D house to this date.

One day I got bored, needed an avatar, resize & voilla.

OK I'll bite.

My avatar is straight forward. It is one I designed myself. I have always been fascinated by angels. At one time in my life I identified a lot with them. (Don't ask.) ANyway I have used angels to depict myself for years. I met my wife online chatting under the name of "The_Angel_". I have also used Dark Angel, before there was a telivision series. I was a little bit gothy.

I finally grew up a little bit after having a wife and some kids. I also no lnger feel the need for anonimity, but the Angel icon that I designed way back in HS has stuck.

The design came to me in HS as a Abstract Angular impressionistic rendition of an angel.

This icon was done in MS Paint and Photoshop. I hate drawing regular line art in Photoshop. Maybe I should update my avatar with a 3D design based on it.

Irises remind me of my mother, who wasn't much of a gardener, but always grew irises. I asked her about it once and she said that irises reminded her of her mother, who used to grow them, too. My maternal grandmother died before I was born, and my mother is now gone as well, but an iris still evokes warm thoughts of both these women. Though my mother was not a tech geek by any means, she set me up with my first email account years ago, correctly assuming that it'd be one way to get me to write more often. She even had a Newton before I even knew what a PDA was!

On a related note, my husband and I purchased a "new" 102 year-old house this summer. The first time we saw the place, irises of various types and colors were in bloom all over the gardens - the place instantly felt like "home."

At one time, I had a little picture of Captain Kirk, since my name is Kirk (and so, people are always like, "as in Captain?").

Later, I changed it to a still shot from a "Streaming Freedom" video-cast from the Dark Angel series. I really liked the looks of the show (okay, okay.. Jessica Alba is a total hottie, what other reason would I need to watch!!) :-)

Anyway - due to the tight 75x75 pixel requirements, I had to move the text around, so that both the words "Streaming" and "Freedom" were at least partially visible (just used Jasc PaintShopPro 5, quick and dirty).

And - BigDaddy - I *do* remember ALL of those computers.
I started out in the 7th grade programming the TRS-80 Model II, and by the eigth grade, they had me teaching the 7th graders BASIC programming in lieu of Algebra 1 day per week.

I then saved up money working in my Dad's shop, and bought a Commodore VIC-20 (with it's 3.5K of RAM). Then moved to a Commodore 64, then a second one (when I wore out the first one, and killed it with black-powder... don't ask).

Then, I flirted a bit with an Atari 400 (which sucked.. membrane keyboard), before moving onto the Commodore Amiga, which was revolutionary when it came out.

Finally, I went onto the PC world (sigh), and built a "white-box" from components, then another, then my 1st laptop, and now my new awesome laptop!

I guess, technically, my first programming was done on a Magnavox Odyssey Videogame console; I got the "Programming" cartridge as a gift, probably back in 1978 or so, when I was like, 10, and taught myself to use the limited Assembly-language on it to write some very simple games (hang-man, guess-my-number, etc). The Odyssey had a membrane keyboard, unlike the Atari 2600, which is why my parents got it over my sister's objections.

To this day, I remember hearing my parents in their room debating what to get us for Christmas, my 3 sisters all having voted for the Atari - my Dad said very clearly, "Well, the magnavox one has a keyboard, and that programming thing, and I just think computers might be a big thing someday". (remember that, in 1978, almost nobody had a computer at home really, other than a few Apple I fans)

And... he was right! they sort of did get big!

Well, like 90% of all the known world I am a *huge* fan of "The Simpsons." So when it was finally time for me to add an avatar for all of the various message boards I frequent I immediately knew that I needed a picture of Homer as "Mr. X."

After 4 solid hours of scouring about 30 different Simpsons websites I finally found the perfect picture. A little resizing for each of the assorted board's limitations and... Ta Da!

Mine is my current PocketPC -- a Toshiba Genio e550G -- running PocketQuake. It's great.

I actually started posting here first just before I bought it, but I didn't make an avatar until I started posting over at PocketMatrix (that's where the PocketQuake forums are...).

First I took a nice high res pic of the PDA with my Olympus, then cut out the background and the screen and oriented the thing just right in PhotoShop. The screenshot came from GetPDAScreen by Newmad Technologies (http://www.newmad.se/software.asp). Just streched the screen shot and resized -- voila. The original avatar (and in fact the one still up at PocketMatrix) was a GIF with some rough edges, though I didn't notice that on PocketMatrix's dark backgrounds. After reading this thread I put that two-color gradient in the background, flattened and resized again -- much better. I wish I'd thought of that one -- it's a much better way to solve the two-color problem than GIF transparency. (Of course, if Internet Explorer supported PNG alpha-transparencies that would be awesome, but that would be progress and I guess the IE coders don't like that much...)

Bottom like I love my PocketPC and I love PocketQuake, so there you go.

Sorry for the long answer,

You know, I honestly can't count the number of times I've had that very same thought. I guess we're lucky that IE even supports PNGs at all. Of course if some future version eventually does support alpha transparency, you still couldn't really use it that much for some time since most other browsers would still ignore it.

Well...I was on the boards when we had no avatars. When they started, I didn't upload one, and since I was a regular I was ribbed for not having one. I thought I'll get something really different, and began a search on the net. I found the animated gifs, and fell for this little guy. At that point no one had an animated gif on the boards I frequented.

Shortly after his upload, lots of people started uploading obnoxiously busy avatars. Which frankly I didn't care for myself...so I changed mine, I didn't want it to be distracting. Man I got nailed for it. No one wanted me to get rid of him. People said we love him, it's just those others we can't stand. I was kinda forced to bring him back, and he's grown on me and many others. So, he's stuck with me ever since.

Mine is pretty straightforward. I was in the Army, in a unit that specialized in cold-weather, light-infantry operations. On a website about the history of my division, (goes back to WWII), there was this picture of an American ski soldier and a dog. I liked it, since about the only thing that has changed was the rifle. The snowshoes, skis, overwhites and everything else was essentially the same.

A bit of trivia for those of you who ski. Many of the ski resorts in the U.S. were started by former members of the division after the war. Bob Dole was also a member of the division when he was wounded.

So, that's my story...

Renee, try going to this site Gifworks.com (http://www.gifworks.com/), and using it to modify your GIF/TIF file. You can resize it, change it, etc. and keep the animation. It's a free utility that does not require you to downloand any software. You use it remotely. Just use File Open on the HTML page that the links opens and point it to the file you want to modify.

 My husband. ;) Pet name. So to speak.

Occasionally friends as well, but it's pretty rare. Basically it's because I really like cats (duh). I wanted pet cats for a long time but couldn't get them until I bought my condo (against renter rules), and I was mildly obsessive about it. Also when I made my own mix CDs (at least before I got lazy and just started using a Sharpie) I put the cat graphic (line art version) on the printed CD labels and put "Sleeping Cat Records" above it.

I don't see myself becoming a "cat lady" (2 cats is plenty, 3 is possible but stretching it), but I do enjoy using cats as a personal "theme".

I have decided to start using it instead of Kati42, it's "Kat-chy"...

I wanted somthing that told somthing about me but was not too revealing such as a picture of my self. I took a picture of my pocketpc and put it over the outline of my state Alaska. It's pretty simple but I like it.

Maybe, but I'm not a cat "owner". I saw the egg that most people seem to have seen. Even after you said it was a cat, I didn't get it at first. Finally, I saw the cat curled up, but I still have to look twice to get it.

Maybe if it wasn't a perfect oval, it would be easier to see (and harder to mistake for an egg). It's like one of those optical illusions almost. :-)

I'll join this late as well!

Mine was sent to me by a friend because he thought it summed up me, my ppc use and my general ability to ruin technology.

For those of you who don't know who it is:

Derek "Delboy" Trotter is a character from one of the UK's favourite TV shows of all time - 'Only fools and Horses'.

His catchphrases are ledgendary - "You Plonker" "Mange Tout" "Cushdy"

Anyhow apparently not only do I look like him, speak french as fluently, I also have any number of scams and quality deals going on at any time, and have some phrases of my own: "Moulin Rouge" being very popular!!

One interesting fact - I have met him as well - in a private casino in Birmingham UK - I sat at a roulette table with the actor "David Jason" and whilst I lost my money and got royally pissedup. He made pleasant conversation to everyone!!

So as we would say:

"The french have a word for people like me!"

So what exactly does "Air Assault" mean in the Army? Parachuting, piloting, what?

Air Assault involves the determination and marking of helicopter landing zones, ground crew operations at the landing zone (hand signals, ground markings, personnel required and their positioning, etc), sling load preparation and inspection for flight, and rappelling from the aforementioned helicopters.

This web site below describes it almost as it was for me. There are some discrepancies, but I assume the page was written a while ago. For example, I had only 18 minutes to complete the 2 mile run on Zero Day and it wasn't a formation run; we did PT (Physical Training) 6 of the 10 days, not every day; a water trailer was added to the list of things we had to know how to sling load and we didn't have to know the fuel blivets; the ruck sack for the 12-mile road march was 35 pounds rather than 30.

http://web.mit.edu/armyrotc/airassault.htm

Also, what they fail to mention is that you are wearing your BDU pants (Battle Dress Uniform - the camouflage stuff you're used to seeing soldiers in) AND your boots and you are soaking wet (cause they made you crawl through a huge puddle) for your 2-mile run.

... the PDA-Gerbil-background-trick(tm), which I agree with you was neat (although he took it one step further -- the blue background switches back and forth on his...) ...
I was going to do something like that but didn't want to get sued for patent infringement. Besides, it's a much more subtle effect with his avatar since there is less background showing; I think it would be distracting on mine to have the colors flip around like that.

This thread's still running? I think I was in elementary school when I first saw BigDaddy ask this question...

 Yup and I've always put off reading this thread until I had a spare hour or so. Fascinating seeing who's still around and what changes there have been since this started.

My avatar was created for a variety of reasons. At University I had a friend who's brother almost got elected to the student's union with the slogan "Vote Cute, vote cuddly, vote Gerbil!" It just stuck in the mind. (No it doesn't *have* to make sense). Also, I read Tech Report (http://techreport.com/) used to tag all anonymous posts as 'Anonymous Gerbil'. It just liked the sound of 'Gerbil' and no, I don't own one as a pet. (I'm more of a cat person).

Having devised on a name, I needed an avatar. I poked around Google until I found a suitable candidate and then photoshopped it to my liking. The the big overhaul of the PPCT site image to two colours made me work on getting the background looking OK whichever colour of blue was behind the avatar, which lead to the gradient and then to the flipping. I tried to make it subtle and unobtrusive, but I do like the effect. So, that's me.

dh
06-20-2004, 12:58 AM
I've also messed about with a gradient of the two blue colours in various avatars (and still have one in my sig logo), but have settled on a transparent one for now.

My avatar now is my current PDA (if that's the right expression for what's really a tiny laptop), the wonderful, Linux powered, Zaurus C860.

I think I've gone through three or four avatars since I first posted in this thread.

I doubt this thread will ever die. There's always new avatars and member who should be posting. Heck, I only just got round to it.

And I don't think I've even posted in this thread yet, so why did I choose my avatar? I have no idea! 8)
You know what it is, right? It's Duke, Sun's Java mascot. :)

Heheh...sorry Janak to ruin your symmetry. Maybe you can re-establish it again one year from now. This can so become a nice record post!
No problem. Kati and I will probably be here forever... 8O

Uh-oh... Is that a threat? Or are you feeling the "I will never finish my PhD" blues and letting that spill over into "We will never leave this site"?

......."We will never leave this site"?

Why would you want to, with all these other colourful characters here ?

No, but do you foresee any escape from academia? Or PocketPCia, for that matter? :razzing:

Yeah - next week I'm going to Seattle and Vancouver. :P

But I'll be back after that.

Well having arrived here from another post I'll kick things off again by saying that my avatar was designed and made my a member of the forums of a site I used to run (Access All Areas) and since it does look like a silhouette of me I asked if I could use it.

I seem to remember that I originally asked about just using it for athree.com but I suppose that it just travels around with me now.

My avatar is a picture of my new car (bought 2 months ago) covered in the snow that is so rare here in Socorro, NM. In case you can't tell, it's a dark blue PT Cruiser with wood paneling. And those heated seats sure came in handy when that snow was falling :D

there are very few people use their own pictures as their avatars. no matter what you choose an avatar, i think you shouldnt change it, because i remember the members from their avatars.

Great to see old threads revived!

My Avatar is a spinning Newton logo - no matter where my PDA/mobile computing journey takes me the Newton will always be my first love!

Lacking in creativity I figured I'd plunk in a picture of my car, an '02 Subaru WRX. I truly appreciate that all wheel drive especially tonight as we got hammered with about 6 inches of snow.

Well, Daffy just rocks. :rock on dude!:

But yeah...I'd like to create my own, custom avatar sometime, but haven't gotten that creative yet. ;) Some day, perhaps.

My avatar is still the same. A hut on top of a hill, overviewing the sea.
One of the most serene place I have ever been during my travels.

I'm uncreative, so my avatar is my device. But the screenshot on the device changes! Ooh, I'm so tricky.

Agreed. I love Futurama, and have all of the DVD box sets. :P
As for my avatar, it isn't Christmas anymore, so I had to get rid of the Christmas avatar... :(
I couldn't just have it blank, so I used an emoticon that represents one of my interests, sleeping.
