I've been hearing rumours that the upgrade on the e740 that Toshiba is performing on the recall units will not be made available to the rest of us, due to some sort of hardware conflict. Has anyone else heard anything about this?

Mashtim,
There are as many rumors over this as I have ever seen on a Pocket PC issue.
Some say that Toshiba messed up on the e740 boot loader, making it impossible for the user to perform a ROM update. Since this would mean that Toshiba would hae to recall every e740 sold to make a general ROM update this group of rumors indicate that only those units recalled for the battery flaw, or sent to Toshiba for some other warranty work, will have it installed.
On the other hand there is a counter-rumor stating that Toshiba will have a user loadable ROM update out before the end of the year.
All I can say for sure is that Toshiba refuses to make a public statement on the question, and that I have been unable to get any straight answers from Tosh support when I have questioned them directly.
So you pay your money and you take your chance. For me personally, I'm returning my e740 to Toshiba for some non-recall warranty work, and I have been assured that they will update the ROM while they are working on it. I just have to wait and see.

I just got off the phone with Toshiba Tech Support. They were exceedingly evasive as to whether or not there will be a flash update available at all, let alone soon. I guess we'll just have to keep our fingers crossed for a while longer.
I DO have to say, though, that since MS established their requisites for PPC2K2, the chance are in favor of there being a flash upgrade available sooner or later. My bet is that Toshiba will find some way or other to provide one, as the cost of the current recall alone is putting quite a strain on them. Having to recall all e740s to upgrade them will put an effective end to their PDA operations. Obviously, they will try to avoid this at all costs!

I guess the Maestro/E570 battery pack is vaporware. Doesn't anyone other than Compaq standardize all their model numbers so parts can be swapped between units?
I'm a bit peeved about the service pack 3 as well. As to how slow or non-existant the rollout is.
