Wow. This is NICE. I love IRC, I am connected to irc more than 12 hours all weekdays (at work). It is a great resource, I have friends all around the world that I keep contact with through irc, but what I really use it for it for being a better professional. I am a programmer, and get together 20 or so programmers with different areas of expertise and experiences and you have a porwerful resource. I ask questions, but also try to help the newbies and the advanced on the little stuff that I can help them. Also at my current job I am the sys admin (shouldnt, but its a small company, I am the guys who knows the most) and I have gotten great help at once, fast answer to my questions, and suggestions on solving problems. A week or so after begining my current job, I impressed my boss with the power of this tool getting answers fast, its a great way to push you when you are stuck in a little, frustrating bug or problem.

Besides that, it can be fun!

I can't wait the time I can get (in Spain) wireless flat-rate. Always dreamt of this, for the train, lines, etc. Know many of you guys already got this, I am holding for an iPaq 5000 to get myself, finally, connected.

:)

Sorry for rant. Gonna try this irc client from my cradle internet pass through, it does look GREAT.

I can't wait for Trillian (www.trillian.cc) to come out with a PocketPC version of their software. To be able to access AOL, MSN, Yahoo!, ICQ & IRC from the PPC would be WAY cool.

i just wish they'd support DCC and CTCP and other commands commonly used. :(

Have they announced that they're working on a Pocket PC client? That would be cool. :D

Email the developer - I'm sure they're pretty open to feedback.

Wow. Tried it. Niece piece of software, very well designed, lean and runs without any problem. Emailed the author congratulating him and giving him a couple of UI tips. When I began coding for the pocketpc, this was one of the learning projects I was tempted to do... but I had already done a (very simple) irc client, and went to a database project. Even so, wish I had done this, it seems like a very fun project to code.

BTW, DCC and CTCP are quite complex but the author promises they will come in a future version. Want this to happen? Buy this, support his work and he will do it. I would have done the same, first release the client without this (which you can live without) and then put this. Although doing file transfers to and from a pocketpc does sound very tempting...

I tested from my pocket pc's cradle. I am still holding for a phone edition, and will probably buy at end of year when the iPaq 5000 comes out and I can compare.

BTW Jason, I did read about Trillian doing a pocketpc version, a while ago. No idea where I did tho.

True, there are already free IRC clients for PocketPC, but "just as good"... ? Feel free to try the alternatives and compare them to PocketIRC... I think the software speaks for itself :)

DCC is on the way, delayed slightly due to other projects that have come up, but it will definitely be implemented in the near future (free update for registered users). There is already support for CTCP, it just doesn't entirely work properly due to a bug I fixed a couple of days ago :oops: That'll be included in the next update as well.

I intend to eventually allow customisation of the menu's and commands available via scripts and/or plugins, this is probably a little ways off though. I've been quite pleased with the response to PocketIRC I've been getting so far, and will try to keep improving it as long as people show an interest. I'm certainly interested in hearing about which features you'd most like to see in future releases :)

hmm, something worth downloading it for? ok... this is real easy..

landscape mode.

the largest missing feature in most applications. :/

I'm developer of PocketCHAT. I'm waiting for Microsoft .NET Compact Framework to develop PocketCHAT version 2.0.

I plan to add;

* Profile Manager ( more than one profile)
* Server List Manager
* Color and sound support
* More stable IDENT server
* Send/Receive File
* Landscape mode
* Simple Script Engine (Like mIRC)

But i cant say anything about when its available, maybe february 2003. So, be patient, save your money... :)

Note : PocketCHAT has won the award at the Pocket PC Summit 2002 in the category of "Chat & Messaging".

What is this? some kind of war between PocketIRC and PocketChat?
I don't think it's a good idea and you two (Brook Miles and Pchat dev) know it.
I have tried PocketIRC and I liked it so much that immediately bought it. Pocketchat never has been installed in my PPC for more than 2 weeks, since I hate V Basic proggys. Maybe next version will be better, especially if it's able of doing landscape. Since it's free, it will be many people's choice (not for hardcore IRCers, but for ocasional ones).

But PocketIRC is my choice.

It wasn't my intent to single out PocketChat in my previous post :) There are other clients available than just ours. GatorChat was released roughly the same time as PocketIRC, and I even had a bit of a chat with the developer (on IRC of course).

Nothing wrong with a little competition, keeps everybody on their toes :D

Landscape mode is certainly worthwhile for IRC clients (and many other things), however I don't think it makes much sense to implement it seperately in each application. Utilities like JSLandscape rotate the screen orientation for the entire device, and developers only need to be aware that the screen size may be different than the default. I've tested PocketIRC in landscape mode using JSLandscape on the iPAQ and using the built in rotation feature on the Jornada. It's not perfect, some of the option dialogs aren't completely accessable, but the actual chat inface works well. I'm not sure how other clients currently handle being in landscape, but most apps could easily do so with a minor patch.

brook, unfortunatly that dosnt work

I cannot use any of those applications because my video cardware in my maestro is not supported. This will also be the case in any and all future products because they will be getting all new chips, and these programs are NOT getting updated!

if a program supports it, it can do it the "legit" way and not use any hacks. these landscape programs use hacks to not only rotate the window, but introduce different resolutions.

What is the "legit" non-hack way?

jeffmd

brook, uhmm.. its called telling windows to rotate the orientation of every line of text and every window (you will most likely need to write a whole new gui for widescreen mode so you can allow for wider input boxs). Windows does not complain about this because this is how windows works. You can do this in windows.. its part of the OS.

A landscape hack program lies, cheats, and intercepts its way between windows and the display buffer and tells windows to do things the hardware was never ment to do, hence it dosnt work on all pdas, especialy ones that were not tested on it.

have you actually looked at these landscape programs? there is a reason they are not "all the rage" nore are they recomended. THEY SUCK

oh, and they arn't free either.

I like PocketChat and also PocketIRC. But until there is a good solution for both the resolution on the PDA will make IRC a hated thing. I remember ircii on linux and bitchx and then there was Xircom (ported to windows) and the ever and always love and hated mIRC. mIRC is the winner for me since I use Windows almost 120% of the time. The PDA is an awesome device and until the IM clients are updated to utilize the PDA better than what they do, I see this a slow thing to bloom. The 2 highly mentioned IRC apps for the PDA here are good and both have there strong points, back in my spending frenzy when i first got my PPC 2k device I bought the movian IRCce client. I used it maybe a total of 7 times if that. When I am able to use a client that is under 500k like Pocket IRC and still get the full use out of it like I do on my PC will I spend money on it again. I donated money to Trillian and now I have Trillian pro and will always give these guys money. Why cause they give what the IM community really needed and in a way that there is some sort of standard. Jabber to me is a flop and so it Odigo. When Trillian is ever developed released for the PDA in whole you will see a huge growth there. I am glad that there are 2 apps now that IRC work ok with. I am waiting for an app that actually lets me hold a conversation via my PDA on irc as quickly as I can take notes using Wordlogic or Transcriber in notes. I think that a better resolution on the PPC front is needed for that and also more R&D so to say on the software front.

I am dont ranting and blabbering.
Try not to flame this post to much as I have just tried to post my thoughts and comments for everyone to read and maybe even agree with.

haha, I baught IRCCE too for my compaq 2015, it was like the only irc client at the time and it was like $10 through one of the online thingies, it was cool. irc on a 640x240 display was happening.
