The link I've attached requires a subscription unfortunately, but he crux of it is that it would ship in 2003. No release date mentioned and no device specifics were given. Lets hope the sub-$300 ViewSonic and iPAQ 1900/2200/whatever ships by Christmas in enough volumes to impact 4th Quarter 2002 market share.

I wonder if they are withholding on it to get rid of all the Palms they have. I noticed they are giving away a new Palm with a Laptop puchase, it would be pretty lame if that was the case.

Say it ain't so... :( Must get new PDA... must stop using Jornada 525... I'd just give up and get an Ipaq 3835, but I'd be in the same boat as I am right now soon enough. Buying an already out of date Pocket PC. (And more expensive than the Dell $299, at that.)

Not likely. These devices are going to be hitting the market a little late in the season to make much of an impact on the holiday sales. And when you consider the post-holiday quarter is traditionally a slump for consumer electronics merchandise, I would say low-cost PPCs won't collectively make a strong showing in marketshare until March 2003.

Well, gotta give Dell credit. If they don't make it by the end of the year, it would seem what they've done is to kill other PDA sales (e.g. everyone will be waiting for Dell).

Looks like Microsoft and Dell are so close that Dell's now picking up MS's tricks :?

Talked to Viewsonic today and they are outperforming expectations and are hoping to just keep up with demand. [/quote]

DOH! What a bummer. I am looking forward to Dell finally releasing their specifications. I think they are going to be late to the party and they were smart (cruel) enough to get a teaser out so fewer buyers show up to the party before Dell does. I for one am going to wait for Dell to ship before I a make my next PPC purchase.

On a side, today I finally decided that I no longer am looking for the super device that meets my needs for a portable hard drive, pocket pc, mp3 player, etc. I ordered the Archos Jukebox with 20GB hd and FM radio. The single device is just too elusive.

"There are many different competing standards but we do see some momentum in the (Microsoft Corp) Pocket PC standard, and if you stay tuned in the press I think you'll see some announcements coming from Dell fairly soon, at least in the United States."

Uh...how is that possible if the Viewsonic PPC isn't even shipping yet?

they have taken pre order tho' they could gouge market acceptance from that, since I dont' think there is market saturation at $299 yet.

........and about dell not releasing product because of possible flood.

i just want to say..... I HATE CARTEL. whatever happen to unbridaled capitalism! I want destructive price war dammit!

Piggity at PocketPCPassion:

"I think the $599 price is for the small PC Dell is introducing in Japan, not the price of their Pocket PC".

If you all read the article again, I think they really talked about the PC release in 2003, not PDA. So we may see the Dell PPC this christmas. HOORAY...

Redd, I'm choosing to blindly believe you, simply because I like what you say.
Now, excuse me while I go shut myself in a cave til release.

Desperation is sad... :)

Really, I'm not going either way just yet. On one hand, having read the article again I do believe they were talking about the PDA

BUT!

On the other hand I've heard "on-track for November 1st" several times AND I remember one of the main points back when Dell was getting quotes was that it be delivered before the end of the year.

So...

If Dell waits until 2003, it's too late -- they'll be behind the curve and the cheap price really won't be all that spectacular like it would if it came out next month. Dell's gonna blow it if they don't get their product to market immediately!

I doubt a couple of months is going to leave them completely behind the curve. Plus, the announcement alone will do a great deal to hold peoples purchasing until they at least see the Dell.

Further, Dell doesn't really complete on high end features they tend to compete on price which means they are vying for a different market (e.g. companies that wouldn't mind waiting a couple months to save $100 per unit)

If they release the unit in January or February, then it won't be suffering from feature lag, true. But missing out on the Christmas season cannot be good. Fortunately PPC manufacturers and Palm don't keep the same 3 month product cycle as Sony does!

I'm not sure I see what you mean. I would say that the 3850, which was released over a year ago, still competes pretty well against the current offerings. Feature for Feature it still beats some as a matter of fact.

Heck, when I bought the 3850 I was upset because it didn't really have much over my 3635.
