The police used a warrant to search the Sony Clie of a suspect of a theft identity ring. As the guy made a lot of use of his PDA in his activities they found a lot of interesting things. Names, pictures, To Do's.... "With the increased popularity of digital organizers police are seeing an increased usage in pdas with criminals. Everyone from drug dealers to pimps are taking advantage of the convenience which a pda can offer. Many times these individuals mistakenly believe that the information they are storing on these devices is private - when experts feel that it is actually quite easy to crack the encryption on most Palm handhelds."

But, really, how could someone smart enough to run such an operation and run a PDA be so dumb?

These guys should adapt well to the new 5000 series Ipaqs. Biometric scanning for security should be a plus. Not to mention that fingerprinting should be a nature process for them. :)

Most criminals are dumb. They leave so much evidence it leads police right to them.

I am surprised at the weakness in the Palm OS encryption. I wonder if OS5 is any better?

BTW, I saw a similar article in the NYT this week, all about criminals using the Palm, but in the picture the cops were hacking an older iPAQ.

Guy should've been using a PPC with ViskeyCE (http://www.viskey.com/viskeyce/index.html)active. He could set up a screenshot of a map of his neighbourhood, and use a dozen or so favourite hangouts or scenes of crimes as tap-points. It'd be right there, under the investigators' noses, with no way to crack it.

I'm no expert on ppc law or nothin, but i imagine it wouldn't matter how well ur data was encrypted cause they could prolly just charge u with withholding evidence. Then again that might be better than conviction for some horendous crime cause u gave em the password to ur crackheads n hoes files :D

Hey, if I am a crook, charge me with withholding evidince. :) The penalty is much ligher than what it'll be if I hand everything over. That only works on someone that has no charges against them and can be charged with obstruction. I am an expert on the law because I've seen every episode of Law and Order at least twice. :lol:
