View Full Version : The joy of a reflective (yes, reflective!) screen

OK, so I've seen the backlit transflective screens, and they're beautiful. No doubt I'm looking closely at the 5400 as the next step to replace my trusty 3870.

However, I do have to say one thing about reflective screens: they're incredibly easy on the eyes. By not having light shine directly out of your screen, I find them much easier to stare at for long periods of time. Case in point: I went home from a long day at work a week ago, after having stared at a bright screen, and my eyes were literally bleary. However, I fired up my iPaq while waiting for my train to leave, and got so engrossed in an eBook that I ended up reading it for ~ 35 minutes further, instead of playing MP3's and catching some sleep. I was shocked to notice my eyes actually felt refreshed, not strained, after the end of it.

If anything, it's more paper-like (i.e., indirect lighting).

Now, if only the 3870 had perfect ClearType... the HTC/T-Mobile Pocket PC phone edition is absolutely stunning with ClearType, and it's easy on the eyes as per my iPaq.

Anyone else's thoughts? How about the 4" Genio screens?

The whole cleartype issue was never an issue with me. I used the second notch on the font size slider on my 3835/50 and never noticed any color banding. It's different with my 3975 cleartype works fine all the way to the highest font setting. Not that I use it but it's nice that it works.

It's not an issue per se; in fact, I run the 2.20 ROM on my 3875 and that has eliminated any color banding. It's that on the HP Jornada and PPCPE, it looks absolutely stunning. You have to see it in person to understand what I mean :D

Having said that, yes, I've gotten accustomed to long Reader sessions with the half-implementation of ClearType on the iPaq's display, and it doesn't bother me as much as it did way back when in the early 3650 days.
