View Full Version : The good, the bad and the ugly!!

I've had my Loox in about a week now. I've had many PDAs in the past since about a quarter century from the early Casio DBCs to the Casio E-125 that I still have. I've had about 15 of them that I've used extensively.

This is my thought about the Loox so far:

The Good, ...
- design, size, CF type II and MMC/SD slots, screen viewable outside

... the Bad, ...
- screen lower quality and smaller size: you'll never beat the Casio HAST screens for everything but direct sunlight (in which case you get sunlight glare anyways)
- at time this 400 MHz device can be slower than my 150 MHz Cassiopeia!!! Especially at screen refresh it's obviously slower. But I also tried opening Gigabar's config screen on both devices; and tho one would expect it to be 3 times slower, the Casio opens it faster than the Loox !!!

and the Ugly  :
- NO backup battery, and that's aweful. In the middle of this afternoon I reached for my Loox to write some quick notes but it was dead, I mean really dead: no battery life and no data either. And I just charged it overnight and didn't turn my Loox on; I had exams this morning.

When I pressed the power button it didn't turn on, so I tried to soft reset it: nothing, so I put it back in my pocket and grabbed a paper and pen to do the job.

A little while later: turn it on: nothing; soft reset again, wait, nothing. I had to get home this evening to plug it in and turn it on and the little jingle it sounded while rebooting stopped my heart from beating since I've disabled the Events sounds in the Sounds and Reminder applet. I quickly realized my until now trusted device betrayed me and that past the boot sequence I would find it as clean as the day it left the factory; and it was

Then I recalled that this morning I woke up with the sweet alarm on my Loox; the alarm went off and it sounded twice and froze up, the screen still on, impossible to turn it off with the power switch. I had to soft reset it. So I quickly relized that it must have happened again, thus quickly drying up the battery throughout the day, unnoticed, and wiping clean all my data on it; because the power saving timer couldn't turn it off since the Loox locked up.

D@mit!!!

Sure I have my data syncronized with my PC and since I didn't write anything on the Loox today I can restore it.

But how can I trust anymore my Loox now that it won't do that again, that it won't lock up before sounding an alarm; thus making me late for an appointment or not warning me about an important thing to do and wiping all my data again, possibly at the worst time while far away from my desktop?!!

That's why the ipaq automatically backs up the contacts data to the "unwipeable" ROM in the area not used by the OS and standard apps.

But the Loox doesn't have neither of these functions and it's giving me the creeps :( !!!
