I have to pick up one of these wifi cards in the next week or so.

I've seen some prices as high as $170! Youch.

Does anyone know a reliable place for the cheapest price?

How about the Socket version for $138. (http://pocketpcthoughts.pricegrabber.com/search_getprod.php/masterid=526975/search=Socket%2520Communications/ut=4493b2c3626a81b0)

Does the socket version support windows 2000?

The symbol card has drivers for PDAs as well as desktop OSs. This is what i'm looking for since i don't want to have to buy a pcmcia wifi card for my laptop and a cf one for my pda. I wanna use the same for both (cf to pc card adapter for the laptop).

I see drivers for the symbol card on their site, but nothing about that on the socket page.

Any idea?

Ah...that answer is no, the Socket card doesn't have desktop drivers. Sorry for misleading you.

You know it won't be long till you want a seperate card for each so you can make an Adhoc network between them or attach via an AP. Might as well admit it. :)

I may eventually want seperate cards for each, but right now, i don't see me ever having to use them both at the same time wirelessly (i never use my PDA in my house. It's main use starts once i leave my house).

But even if I did, i don't have that type of cash to dish out right now.

So one card it is!

I guess I'm pretty much stuck with the Symbol.

So, anyone have good prices on those? :D

Ok, just found another card that supports both but can't seem to find much info on it.

http://www.smc.com/index.cfm?sec=Products&pg=Product-Details&prod=235&site=c

The SMC SMC2642W.

Has drivers for desktop and PDAs. Looks like it's supported in Linux too which is a major plus.

Anyone have info on this card/ experience using it, etc?

Whilst the Socket card doesn't have any drivers for Windows (yet) it is actually the same hardware as the Symbol card. The Symbol drivers work flawlessly on XP for me (with a tiny mod). See the Socket Forum (http://www.socketforum.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=868) for details.

IMHO - A really good product, but even more expensive in the UK :(.

Well, since i had spent $70 at J&R's buying the Linksys card that didn't have win2k drivers, i now have $70 store credit returning it.

They sell that SMC card there for only 20 bucks more, so I think i'll try that out and save some cash. The smc page has drivers for all the OSs i'm interested in (aside from Linux, which has drivers for it elsewhere),

Interesting about the Socket card, though. I thought they looked very similar. Is Socket planning on supporting the desktop OSs soon?

I'm not sure if they will or not, but I'm wondering if you could buy the Socket Card and use the Symbol drivers on your laptop...I bet it would work. :-) (but if I'm wrong, don't kill me!)

Has anyone here ordered through that company?

I'll probably have to pick it up through them, but i wanna be sure the seller is a decent place to do business with.

For those going to Comdex this year in Las Vegas, you can sign up (www.comdex.com) for free use of a Symbol CF or PCMCIA WiFi card for use at the convention. And if you want to keep the card, they'll sell it to you for $85. The PCMCIA card probably isn't that great a deal, but the CF card normally goes for $170-180.
