View Full Version : Toshiba E740 WI-FI quality

Is anyone actively using the WI-FI on their E740? I have got a
lynksys router at home that is working perfectly with WI-FI
PCMCIA cards from Cisco and Netgear. However, the throughput
with the e740 is horrendous. The wireless utility on the e740
says link quality is incredibly good. However, it takes me over
5 minutes to load a simple web page that takes perhaps 2 or 3
seconds on my laptop. Also, I can only get about two out of
every 10 pings to the E740....

Anyone out there got any advice?

I've yet to have any trouble with WiFi on my e740. What is this page that takes five minutes to load - something with a lot of graphics? If so, it may just IE fighting to render the pictures.
For me, the real test to check if WiFi is working well is ActiveSync over the air. WiFi ActiveSync is WAY faster than USB.

The web page is a simple text page 8k jpg file and 2 short text lines.
At 11mbps (the wireless utility says I am connecting at that rate),
this should be retrieved at no time...especially when the web server
is located on the same LAN.

Check the firmware on your Linksys. I've done a lot of wireless work with various vendors, and I recall having problems making a Linksys talk to an Orinoco (similar symptoms to what you describe) until it was firmware upgraded to the latest version. Reading through their release notes at the time made me think that they had a very bad implementation of 802.11b (considering the number of tweaks they had to produce in order to support various vendors' WiFi gear).
