Chris Pirillo told the Screensavers it had the best screen he had ever seen on a Pocket PC.... anybody here anything else about it? Hopefully they will have one at the Pocket PC Summit for me to check out.

Does it handle diagonals and multiple key presses?

What about the battery? 1400mA?

I believe it, but the audio quality is what concerns me. I'm dying to see some reviews. 8O

Good to know. I was very concerned this was a confusion issue over trans/reflective. If it is that good, it is transflective. I wonder if Chris has seen the 3900. Could it be better than that? I don't see how. My eyes wouldn't be good enough to see anything better than the 3900's screen anyway.

I have to believe that this great price is because Dell is rumored to be offering something very similar to this unit (if not better) for $199. Prices for the Toshiba e740 have been dropping faster than (fill in blank) and I think that this can also be attributed to leaked information on Dell's future product offerings.

I just recently sold my Ipaq 3765 for $250, $150 less than I paid for it a year ago, and I felt very good to find a buyer at that price. I am eagerly waiting for Dell's products to finally be shipped. The future appears bright for qued up PocketPC buyers. 8)

Off course about 50% more expensive, as always.

Will it be good accesories? Screen protectors, cases... ? I think is nice anyway, and when the dell units appear, it will cost about $229 or so...

I am ready for a new Pocket PC... but the REAL question everyone is asking is when is this PPC going to be available?

I would only personally get a new 400MHz PPC, but this is almost it! The price is right! I want to know when it will be here, though. Then, I'll put my money down!

Amazon is selling the ViewSonic for $249.00 They are also selling the 3950 Ipaq for $599.00 Only meaningful difference is the Ipaq is 400 Xscale the ViewSonic is 300 Xscale. Not much difference considering everything that has gone on with th Xscale processors.

$350.00 difference in cost! Man that's gotta leave a bruise. 8O

Paragon, you are so right. I mean, HP/Compaq has really been cashing in on the fact that iPAQs are still the most popular PPCs, so they have been charging ungodly prices for them.

There a no dimensions given out on Viewsonic's website - http://www.viewsonic.com/products/pocket_pc_pocketpcv35.htm , but they say it is the thinnest, lightest....

Wow, $50 off already. This really is a hot device. I had a chance to see and use it Saturday. Great screen like Chris says, very vibrant just as the transflectives should be. It is so thin and light. Lighter then the e310, though its casing isn't as sturdy as the e310's. But overal it is a good product for $299 and even better for $249.

PPCRules makes a good point about the CF slot though. Dell is going to give this a run for its money.....Gee I'll bet that's why they dropped the price.

Just add built in BT (or a cheap BT SD card and more ram) and this can be the killer ppc. But, for $250, now is a killer PPC. Especially for the transflective screen.
Just one thing: Will this be upgreadable to ce.net?

I'm still using an iPAQ H3650 2002, so I only have CF/PC card devices and am not very educated on SD, but...

Does this new device do SDIO, or is its SD slot only good for memory? Someone mentioned SD BT or some sort of connection card--it would need to support some type of connection (other than cradle) at least, right?

If such a device can be made at the price and physical size, I'd like to see a ~$500 device slightly larger but with BT, 802.11, ethernet, and modem built-in. The point being, if they can make it that small, can't the bigger devices include more goodies under the hood?!

You would think so, wouldn't you.

I think with this upcoming group of devices, we'll see a commoditizing (new word?) of the low end of the PPC market, and this at a sub-$300 price. For anyone to command greatly higher prices (e.g., Ipaq), they are going to have to integrate compelling features that are not in these commodity PPCs. And, I don't think 'sleek-three-year-ago' styling and outdated, bulky expansion sleds will do it.

Maybe I'm missing something, but this was just started yesterday. Was Amazon actually taking pre-orders? Because there is no order button today, pre or otherwise. They are not even claiming you can pre-backorder the thing. They just say "This item is not stocked or has been discontinued." Pretty short lived, even for a PPC.

I've seen great deals on Amazon before that they never stocked, but listed the best price around.

No need for an expensive Ipaq anymore........ I'm going to turn my old one in. Only an added CF slot onto an even newer Ipaq would make me think other wise. Boy HP needs to do something more! :o

I *almost* bought the Viewsonic (well, pre-ordered) when the purchase option was still up there earlier today, but I decided to wait, and see what Dell's models would be like.

Now, I'm wondering if Amazon had mistakenly put the price at $249, instead of $299, by mistake (typo?) or something.. If so, I'm guessing they'll honor (maybe?) the price for the people who pre-ordered at that price.

All this is just my speculation - i'm hoping that they just took pre-orders for their entire expected shipment, and that the VSs will be available again at that GREAT price (a transflective screen, 64 MB RAM, with SDIO slot... i should have just ordered it... sigh).

I think I can afford a $500-$600 PPC, and I'm good at looking for deals, so that will be the equivalent of the highest-end PPC.

Here's what I would have to have in order to pay that price:
CF2 slot
SDIO slot
high-power & high-speed IR (high-speed probably won't happen)
Integrated bluetooth and WiFi
64 MB ROM
128 MB RAM
Audio In (probably won't happen) (w/ headphone out jack of course!)
good, fixed buttons
2000 mAh Li-ion battery (removable w/backup coin-sized battery ala Casio)
at least 400 MHz XScale
4 inch transreflective screen
USB host
still pretty thin (not ultra thin ala Toshiba 3xx, but decent)

That is NOT too much to ask for in, say, 6 months for a PPC that's twice as expensive as a very decent PPC from Dell or Toshiba or ViewSonic. I mean, why pay twice as much or MORE for only 5% more functionality/quality?

This is the sort of PPC that should be made for high-end users and nothing less.

*sigh*... seems the V35 has a really short battery life, with a mere 900mAh life. I knew it couldn't be as absolutely perfect as it seemed to be.

Xyress
10-18-2002, 01:04 PM
Where did you hear the information about the battery? That's very dissappointing.

Since I've been so happy with my EM-500, I would need 3 things to make me upgrade:

- Faster processor
- More RAM/ROM
- Longer battery life

Everything else could stay the same (I don't mind the size, the screen is great, and it's got incredible buttons). It seems like a no brainer to me to create a killer device. I know people have different needs (dual expansion slots, bluetooth, 802.11b, sleds?, etc.), but you gotta get the basics right first.

Without knowing what it's power consumption will be, how can you judge it's battery life? Different cars have different mileage on the same amount of gas, right? 900 mAH isn't huge, but you may be pleasantly surprised...
