Just switched from a 310 to a 740. The big reason was the WiFi and CF slot. However, no CF modem I've installed actually transfers data to the PDA. I've tried a Pharos modem, an Ambicom modem and a Socket cel phone modem. I've tried every setup combination and verified availability and setup by dialing in with my notebook. The system sees the card (except the Pharos), dials out but never seems to connect. The Pharos modem just wasn't recognized. The Ambicom gave me "no modem at number" error and the Socket Cel Modem returned a "call failed" error.

I'm getting pretty tired of calling tech support where everyone blames each other (what else is new?). That plus the sluggish performance and the ludicrous battery life (several hours versus several days) are encouraging me to switch back to a 310 or move to an HP or Compaq where I've heard the CF modems actually work. Any one else out there with CF experience on the 740? I've not really had a reason to use the WiFi yet (home net still waiting on cable modem), so right now I've got a more expensive, heavier, slower, power-hungry version of a 310.

I had thought I would be able to use my Casio CF II modem from my Casio E-125 but kept having disconnects even though the modem was recognized by the e740. After talking with Toshiba I decided to bite the bullet and buy the one Toshiba recommended as working with ALL their PDA's. The Socked 45K Compact Flash modem arrived today and when I plugged it in I immediately got a message that the slot had an "Unknown Card" in it.

Called Socket and they said send it in and they would get me a new one. I then visited the Forum at Socket.com and found the following:

"For you Toshiba e740
If you own a rev C or lower Socket 56K modem and would like to use it with an Intel PXA Xscale powered unit please contact Socket Communications Technical support at 510-744-2720 or fill out a technical support email form here: www.socketcom.com/support/contact.asp. Socket will issue an "Upgrade RMA". The upgrade is free and will be handled as an upgrade Returns Material Authorization request.

To purchase the Socket 56K modem compatible with Intel PXA Xscale devices see Socket's website or MobilePlanet's website."

So, there is a problem with modems and the Xscale processor. I'll bet you will find all the modem makers have had to make revisions to their devices and we are ahead of the curve and are buying the older models. Socket will be sending me their Revision "D" modem as soon as I can get the "C" model to them.

I had the same problem with my NewMedia 56K CF Modem. I ended up selling it along with my old iPAQ as it was useless on my e740. I haven't had time yet to try out any replacements, but when I hit on one that works, I'll let you know.

Check out this thread, though, for some suggestions.
