In a thread on the smoking deals on the Toshiba e310 Jason wrote that he expected an Xscale e330 version to be released soon. And Barry from Pocket PC Tools.com found a reference to that e330 on the German Toshiba site.

The specs show that Jason was right: a 300 MHz Xscale processor in the same package as the Toshiba e310. But next to the processor, also the internal RAM was upped from 32 MB in the e310 to 64 MB in the e330. The SRP is € 599 including the high European VAT tarriff.

Bleah. Fnac is selling e310s here in Leuven, Belgium for 700 €. Isn't that just disgusting?

hmmmmm....300 MHz Xscale! If a 400 MHz Xscale is almost as fast as a 206 MHZ Strongarm...what can we expect from this one??

Where did 300MHz XScale come from, I thought the fastest was 400 while the slowest was 200MHz....

According to Mobile Planet the Pricing on the e-330 will be 299.95! It isn't on their website yet but I put a capture of the picture here: http://www.cippug.org/breaking_news.htm

I can't wait for this device to become available

It is just a different version of the chip, just like you can get a Pentium IV in different speeds, OEM's can get them in different speeds as well. The fastest XScale is 400 and the slowest is 200 (that have been released), but they did origonally say that there was also 300MHz.

I wonder if they are all the same Chip, just with some software limiting throttle.

Wouldn't it be amusing if you can overclock the 300Mhz to say... 400 ?

Wow! Here in Madrid, Fnac is selling the e310 for 499€ (still too much). The iPaq 3950, for instance, goes for 779€.

I read somewhere (unfortunately I don't know where that was) that the Razor Zayo A600 has a turbo mode (who makes it a bit faster that all the other xscales) which is implemented with the help of Microsoft.

I didn't look back at teh thread, but was jason really the first one (public site) to announce speculated 330 specs? I remember reading those specs a month before jason commented on it, maybe he never got the news and just fell late on the speculation, oh well, doesn't matter...

Anyway, now that we see this, what gives HP the right to price the 3950 at 650 bucks? I mean, the only advantage is the Display, which isn't really worth 350 bucks more... neither is the enhanced IR...

It was rumored a few weeks ago, but the picutres from the German Toshiba site came out this weekend. Actually, we don't really know for sure this will even come to the US.

yipes! steep price hike for what could be perceived as very minor hardware gains.

The same thing that gives anyone the right to decide what price to ask for their goods or services. And you have the right not to pay it if you think it's too high. If it really is too high, then other companies will see the opportunity to undercut them in price, which is exactly what we're seeing now. As prices move downward even more people find they're prepared to buy and the cost of production declines, giving even more leeway for competition to continue driving prices down.

As with all high-tech products, the early adopters of these have paid a premium for the priviledge. The good news is that you'll soon be paying about $300 for something you would have paid $500 for before. So you're actually getting a bargain, even more so than someone who pays the same $300 but is only willing to pay $300.

The gratifying thing about these recent announcements (at least to me) isn't in the products themselves... still not real innovation. It's that the market and technology have finally hit a stage where it's feasible for a larger number of smaller players to come in and compete. As long as it was just the few big-money speculative players, we were never going to see that move from premium product to commodity. Now we're right on the edge of that happening, so solid functionality will be relatively inexpensive and the premium players will have to come up with something really special to keep their market.

of course i didn't mean right, as in legally... :)
I know they can do what they want, I was inferring that HP needs to do a price cut soon on there line of handhelds...

I'll be interested to see how the e330 compares to the e310. One item I suspect to be superior will be battery life, an area in which the e310 excels. I'll also be interested to see if Toshiba learned anything with the e740 and will optimize the e330 for its Xscale processor. I don't think this device offers enough to pull me away from my trusy e310, but I'm glad to see Toshiba covering the low end of the PPC market.

I think you hit the nail on the head for me. Extra RAM is nice but beyond that there isn't much that makes this unit any better than the e310 and people have gotten used to buying e310's for $150 which will hurt the perceived value of the e330.

As for the Turbo mode, it was in the Gadgeteer Review and although she said it "seems" to make things faster it wasn't something that was dramatic and it did seem to kill the battery quicker so I'm not sure of what value the Turbo mode will end up being.

Sorry heov, I really wasn't meaning to be critical. Your rhetorical question just seemed like a good entry into what I wanted to say anyway.
