The biggest SD card on the market today is a 512 MB card, and it will work well.
The biggest CF card is 1 GB - I've tried a 512 MB and it worked fine, so with a CF card sleeve you'd be able to use either one.

Of course, with a PC card sleeve, you can get the 5GB Toshiba PC card hard drive. Note that battery life is worse with hard drives, although the sleeve does have an extra battery to compensate.
You could even go more extreme and have a PC card-powered external (say, 60GB) hard drive, but I suspect that's not what you want.

My roommate has the PC Card Sleeve (though at this point I imagine you'd go with the PC Card Plus) and a 2gb hdd. Since the sleeve has the battery, it actually doesn't noticably reduce battery life. It is very sturdy too, he takes it jogging. Personally, I have a 1gb microdrive. If you are patient, you will be able to get your hands on a 1gb SD card but that will be pricey.
if i go for the toshiba drive what sleve offers my ipaq some protection i men the screen for exsample what do u suggest ?

I don't know of a PCMCIA sleeve that actually has a screen protector ('though there might be one). I'd recommend getting a leather case with a flip cover to protect the screen.

The new iPaq sleeves that have "Plus" in the name include a removeable lith-ion battery and a built-in screen protector.
