The Cruzer is a USB host container, allowing you to connect over USB to a PC and transfer files - it will appear as a local hard drive. What's even better? That the SD card inside the Cruzer is removable, allowing you to use that 256 MB SD card for anything else, including your Pocket PC. According to one customer review, it even works with Macs.

Was the issue with the iPaq and SanDisk SD ever resolved? This is a really great deal, but I'm leary about buying something that will not have compatibility with a wide array of devices. (I'm speaking in reference to the SD card itself, not the Cruzer)

Wasn't it an iPaq issue? I've been using a Sandisk SD card for about 6 months without a problem on my Casio E-200, so it must not be a Sandisk issue.
Now the big question... Can you plug the Cruzer into the USB host port of a Pocket PC? ;-)
i got one of these, and i'm now using the 256 mb version in my pocket pc phone it rules, and it's a SWEET deal. get one.
cheers,

Wow great deal, The 128 meg version is $99 bucks at CompUsa or Best Buy. Now on to buy a case for my PPC Phone...I think I will wait to see the Ivolution case from Vaja.

I just got mine for my Ipaq and I LOVE it 3 1/2 hours of music. I had absolutely no problems using mine.
But . . . I got mine from http://www.mobileplanet.com for the low low price of $149.95 + $6.53 s/h = $156.48
More importantly, they shipped it right away, and Amazon had no ship date.
Enjoy

You couldn't read/write data fast enough to warrant firewire.

Perhaps, but I'm not a Mobile Planet affiliate partner! For a difference of $3...help a brother out!

I bought a SanDisk 128 MB card for my iPAQ 3870 when the deal was listed on the Pocket PC Thoughts home page. I haven't had any problems with it.
There was one issue, but not because of the SanDisk card. I also use a 256 MB CF card, and had all my MP3s on that, with several playlists. After putting in the SD card, whenever I did a soft reset, the SD card would be listed as "Storage Card" and the CF card would be listed as something else, breaking my playlists.
I tried renaming the SD card in the registry, but that didn't work. I eventually renamed the PCMCIA card in the registry to be "CF Storage Card" and edited my playlists on my laptop to change "Storage Card" to "CF Storage Card".

I just checked the deal at Amazon, and it said, "Usually ships within 24 hours".
For the price though, I'd rather get the 512 MB Viking CF card that was mentioned on the main page earlier this week ($150 after a $50 rebate). See Amazon Viking 512 MB CF Card (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00005MIS8/ref=ase_jasondunn-20/104-6571245-7520755) for details. (I even took the time to find and use Jason's affiliate link there. :-))
Steve
P.S. I wonder if Jason would get in trouble if I suggested a method that could get him affiliate credit for any purchase on Amazon. If they don't audit the links, we could make him some money. :-)

Firewire is the only way to go!!
You couldn't read/write data fast enough to warrant firewire.
Why not? I use a firewire reader all the time to upload photos and videos I have taken with my digital camera. For PocketPC I use the cradle to sync to Outlook via USB but use FW to do the rest such as copying MP3, files etc. My work PC has USB only so I use a USB reader there and the difference between FW and USB is quite pronounced (not to mention that PPCs do not even use the full bandwith of USB, so I have read).
I don't think you get it. You can only WRITE to SD so fast. Just because you have more bandwith doesn't meen it will write the file faster. It will get to the reader faster, but you'll still have to wait for the reader to write the data to the SD card, which isn't that fast... Correct me if i'm wrong though.

I think he meant that USB would be more than fast enough for reading and writing SD cards.
As for Firewire, why did you bring it up? Are there any Firewire flash card readers available?
I'd love to see Firewire supported for the Pocket PC, too, but I have no idea whether it would really be any faster. If anything, though, we'll probably see USB 2.0 support before Firewire. :-(

Well, things would be much better if we even got true USB 1.1 speeds from our Pocket PCs - remember that the current USB driver in ActiveSync is still built over a serial driver. I haven't done any benchmarking lately (perhaps someone could take this on), but we're probably not getting more than 115 kbps of real throughput.
I'm a BIG fan of Firewire, but I doubt we'll ever see it in a Pocket PC. It would be cool though to have the sync cable also charge the device - without requiring a third party cable. Firewire has some interesting peer to peer capabilities as well - if there were Firewire digital still cameras, you could connect directly to the camera with your Pocket PC...
USB 2.0 speeds on a Pocket PC would be VERY cool.
Here's an interesting little fact - when I connected my USB 1.1 CF card reader to a USB 2.0 hub, I saw 10% more throughput than being connected via USB 1.1.

Couldn't agree more!
People keep highlighting great offers and prices and they're all US only :x
I run ecommerce sites for a living, I just don't understand how you can use a global platform like the web but not sell globally...

Mostly fear. Most online vendors believe that US customers are for the most part trustworthy but "forners" are not. I recently upgraded a piece of software that both a client and I use. This sw is about $3000 for the upgrade. I've been a customer of theirs for over 5 years, I'm one of the top three posters to their discussion groups, I have shared scipts and customizations for free with their customers and even have an internal version of their product named after me. They know me by my real name and my nick name. I've talked with them on the phone on a regular basis. In short, I thought we'd developed a good customer/vendor relationship. Nope. When I put in the order for 2 licenses, they made me go through all kinds of hoops, including supplying my cc and shipping address several times (once for each hoop), faxing copies of IDs and cc, etc.
I can tell you that my enthusiasm for their product was 'mitigated' much more than their loss protection methods saved them in avoidance of fraud.
Some vendors attempt to mitigate their risks by asking for things that they are not allowed to ask for, either by law or by their merchant cc company. Examples are DL *copies*, past cc statements (the most common), pay check stubs, utility bills, etc. When a company pulls this crap on me, I have no motivation to business with them any longer.
Anyone with an e-mail address like
[email protected] could send a cc number ans a PO box address in the US and they'll happily ship away, but me, one of their most successful customers, I have to do the hoop jump.
Another reason is that many vendors are afraid of the whole taxation issue, terrified of filling out a 3 line customs form, and generally not willing to go the extra effort to get a new foreign customer. I talked with one PPC vendor who as just amazed to find out that there are millions of people living in Toronto, let alone the whole country. Another was afraid that export restrictions might get him in the butt because he had no clue where other countries were on the map and didn't want to take the time to find out.
In short, it that they don't believe they can make a profit, either because they believe all foreigners are out to steal from them, that it will be too much trouble to do the paperwork, or that it will take too much time.
Can you tell this is a real frustration to me?

Do you ship to every country in the world? Do you handle the issues of cross-border shipping, customs, taxes, import/export restrictions, etc.? Are your E-commerce sites available in every language and dialect to truly serve a global community?
If so, why not offer to provide services to those companies that don't and make yourself more money. :-)
Personally, I think those reasons are enough to scare many companies off. It's bad enough worrying about 50 states (especially if they start taxing Internet purchases), not to mention the various cities and counties in the state you do business in.
Finally, Americans tend to be chauvanistic and not worry much about the rest of the world. Why do you think so many of us are monolingual?

Yup, this is where we need US friends who can buy the goods and ship them back to us. To put this in perspective, an Expansys 256Mb Secure Digital Card (one of the cheepest) is £235.00 or $364.25. Now $160 sounds VERY good to me. It might to time to ask my American friend for a favor.
