I've been inspired by the recent posts. Inspired to do more with my iPAQ, PC Sleeve, and Wlan Card. I've decided I want to do something I dreamed of long ago, before I even had my iPAQ: get Shoutcast Streams and play them on my iPAQ.
Why?
Well, controlling Winamp is nice, but so what? I have a computer for that. And Windows Media Encoder is....crap. It just wasn't designed to be doing thi sort of thing. And once upon a time I found some program that would allow you to stream things off of any Windows/SMB share, but it did so at a low quality.
So I find that the ideal solution would be to control Winamp via anything like web interface or the special PPC controlers, and then have the output piped to a Shoutcast streaming server. So far, so good. But heres the catch: Does a shoutcast compatible player exist for the PPC? So far, the answer seems to be no. WMP does not support it, and everything else seems to have generously ommited this feature. So does anyone have a suggestion, or would some adventureous developer create a program such as I am looking for?

I've been thinking about doing this, but wasn't sure how much interest there would be. If enough people speak up, you can be sure that I'll start looking into it more seriously.

Well, if you ever need a beta tester, just email me at
[email protected]. And I would definately pay for this, as I could see getting a lot of use out of it.

Well, here's what i just spent the last little bit doing =)
Winamp -> Gametheatre XP Line out -> Creative Labs (Onboard, i dont use it for much) Line in -> Windows Media Encoder
I'm using remoteamp to control winamp and just windows media player to listen to the stream.
Its working pretty well too over a 11mbps wlan link (orinoco in the ipaq, cheap linksys in the desktop with a 14db yagi)

btw, you ever consider the ability to have the ipaq switchable on/off and not having to redownload/reconnect to the server? Just having the ability to use udp instead of tcp, or have a "dont download the file list except when i say to" and having it autoreconnect would work well =)
Basically, i'd like to be able to save my batteries if i'm lying in bed reading a book and not have to redownload the file list every time =)

Working on this for 1.2 :)

I like his optimism, "working on this for 1.2" :)

I did something like that once, like I think I had Windows Media Encoder taking Direct Sound or Line out and broadcasting that, but for some reason, there was like a 20 second lag from winamp>encoder/pda, so not only did that kinda suck, but it also is needlessly difficult to set up. I just want an all in one, shoutcast solution, since it is a REAL standard that REAL people use.
