if i do a hard reset, then how can i get all the default programs back on to the ipaq? (i do not know anything about ipaq's)

you need to have them installed on your desktop computer. then, when you sync, you can install them through activesync.

if i remember correctly, you are the one with just an ipaq, with no cradle? if that's true, then there's no way you're going to get any software back unless (maybe) you sync through IR port with a laptop.

Use a backup solution. You can restore your device within minutes and restore all data, not just programs.
