Now what's up with that...?

I just got back from holiday. My iPaq 3970 stayed home in its cradle hooked up to the power so it wouldn't die on me...

I got back home and started the media player on my iPaq only to find that it didn't play any sound! When I try to adjust the volume in the menubar, the volume app freezes up and eventually 'crashes' the iPaq...

Is this my iPaq's way of taking revenge for not taking it with me on my holiday?

No seriously... Anyone encountered this problem?

Anyone have a suggestion on what I should do? (soft reset doesn't help)

Yes :D

Seriously, if a soft reset doesn't do anything, the first thing Compaq/HP will suggest is a hard reset, so you might as well get it over with.

Are you getting no sound at all, through the headphone jack as well as the speaker?

I'd have to say that, since the volume control applet is locking up, it seems likely that something's done something bad to the machine's memory. Maybe you had a lightning strike near your house while you were on holiday.

This is why you should carry your PDA with you always. That way if it gets hit by lightning, you won't be in a position to care.

Well since you are using the newest and coolest toy you probably also have the newest and buggiest software in it. Well I started having the same problem once I upgraded my 3850 to 1.20 and whenever I start my unit and I get no sound I can be 100% certain that the moment I touch the volume icon and adjust the setting my iPaq will crash. the only way to get it somehow working again is to power of the unit and power it on and do the same test again and repeat until you reach a point when it actually does emmit sound. I know that this is not a solution but I intend to downgrade my rom back to its original. well you cant do that so you prob wanna talk to compaq. BTW softreset does not guarantee anything
