This paragraph near the bottom is interesting. "Apple and Real increasingly are looking to win more support for their file formats on embedded devices, such as Palm handhelds or cell phones. But Gartenberg said the battle of media formats would be won or lost on the PC, not other devices. There, Microsoft's Windows monopoly could be decisive."<br /><br />I am not a big fan of Real or Quicktime products but I know many people are. In fact, I have neither on my personal PC. Choice is good though, and Real made their <a href="http://www.realnetworks.com/mobile/nokia/index.html">Real One player available for Pocket PCs</a> earlier this year. Even though I wouldn't likely use it, I would like to see Quicktime come to the Pocket PC. It would give the platform more cache, and anything to boost the usability of the Pocket PC is a good thing.

i doubt we will see an apple created version of a pocket pc player. but that said there are some pocket pc media players that play some .mov files now. not all codecs are supported but it's a start.

also, if you buy quicktime pro (like $29 i think) you can convert .mov to .avi or mpg...and run those, or convert those the windows media (wmv).

cheers,

What would be cool is an iPOD device for movies. 20 GB storage, and a display for playing back Quicktime files.

The Mac would need iVideo to be an iTunes for movie clips... and the video device could sync up to download Quicktime content.

Well, maybe they should just put it all together in one device... music, movies, etc from iMedia on the desktop :). That way it has the benefit of music too... but can do movies. Well, then they might as well make a PDA out of it..............................

Just thinking out loud. Sorry :D

so far in my life Real media has been worthless. Stalling, takes my entire computers speed, and sound falling out of sink. I can't edit anything of store it in real because it is a propietary format that doesn't let you edit or decode back to uncompressed. Quicktime i haven't ever been to big a fan of, but they have full support for the MPEG 4 standard. Quick time is looking better and better all the time. I have actually started to use the format on my PC for streaming once and awhile. I still more often than not use windows media but i am not exclusive anymore. More video players on the Pocket pc the better. I still haven't ever had one i was really satisfied with.

Pocket QuickView plays QuickTime 3 files and is also a great graphics file viewer (and more).

not to put down any of the aforementioned 3rd party programs, but the reality is that almost all QuickTime files (movie trailers, music videos) now available are 5.0, which makes them not too handy for current files. hands down, the best thing to play QuickTime files is the actual player itself. as a hardcore video person, i have pretty much every player available for both desktop and pocket pcs, including ones i've had to actually pay for. each one has their good and bad points. one thing that is annoying though is that many overlook making files downloadable when they are creating their content. and some are aware, but worried for various reasons, some valid, some silly, and so don't make downloadable files. oh well. anyway, i'd be very happy to see QuickTime available for mobile devices.
