Well, even though I've recently been accused of "getting really excited about something and [being] the only one," and even though concensus is that, yes, wearing a SCOTTeVEST™ does make me a geek, I've got an update on this great piece of "equipment." Scott Jordan, creator of the SCOTTeVEST™, has announced a new version of the vest, Version 2.5.

This newer incarnation has all of the great pockets and features of the earlier version, plus:

• hood
• hidden ID holder
• earbud pockets
• magnets to keep the jacket closed

If you want my description and impressions of the Version 2.0 SCOTTeVEST™, you can read it here.

It also appears as though the SCOTTeVEST™ V2.5 will be available electric blue and black. The "regular" vest costs $139.99 and an unlined version (the "Sport" model) costs $129.99.

• magnets to keep the jacket closed

Is it a good thing to mix magnets and electronic devices? 8O Just curious, it seems like a bad idea to me!

Hans.

I must be missing something, but I don't understand the use of the magnets? Is a zipper replaced with magnets instead?

I just ordered a Sport version knowing this one was coming out because I thought that was the best option for me and with the coupons got it for $100 shipped. I never use the hoods in my other jackets and wouldn't want it on my eVest either.

This looks really nice! I really like the blue a lot. But Im not quite grasping the concept behind the use of magnets. I mean, I can imagine, but I think we`re gonna need some more clarification on this, Brad. Of course, I could just go to Scotts site, but its so much easier to make you do the work

to answer your question : no, this doesn't make you geekier. You already reached the limit of geekness.

One other thing... I really wish they would do a little something different with the sleeve cuffs and the neck collar. The jacket looks great, and of course I love all of the pockets and the removable sleeves are cool. Of course, not everyone will agree with my suggestions, but there are just a few changes Id like to see.

First, Id like to see the collar fold down and closer to the size youd see on a leather jacket, for example... a bit bigger than a button down shirt collar, in other words. Ive never been a fan of collars that stick straight up. I just dont care for it. To me, a collar that can fold down looks more finished and less geeky.

The sleeve cuffs are ok, but Ive never liked buttons, velcro, elastic, slits, or creases on the sleeves. I just like the look and feel of sleeve cuffs that dont have anything on them or any way to adjust them, but rather, are just simply big enough around that it gives enough room for my wrists for when Im wearing a bigger watch. Not to mention, to me, the look of sleeve cuffs without buttons, velcro, elastic, slits, or creases just looks a lot better. It gives the cuff a much cleaner look. I own a leather jacket with sleeve cuffs like this and I really love it. It looks nicer IMO and the sleeve cuffs offer so much more freedom by giving me a greater degree of movement in the arms because once again, theyre large enough around for when Im wearing a thicker watch.

I havent had the pleasure of owning one of these jackets yet, but I aim to change that very soon! So I dont know if the following suggestion will be a valid one, however, I do know what I like, so heres my last suggestion...

Im aware that Scotty has made some changes with the sizing of his jackets, but Id like to see the jacket in a longer length. Im very tall, and dont care for jackets that are shorter and only go down to my belt or so. I prefer a jacket with a hem that is longer and will reach further down my leg... not clear down to my knees of course, but maybe seven or eight inches past my belt. This looks and feels much better for taller people like myself who are well over six feet tall. Well, at least IMO.

I like the jackets features, the new additions and the electric blue color, but truthfully, Im waiting for these three changes. To me, they would make the jacket perfect! :D

I would have to agree, Brad has reached the limit. But for those of us who are more normal (which doesn't include you Ed ;-)), it would make us about 10 times geekier!

No seriously, I have always loved the eVest idea. Version 2.5 looks like more great improvements on the older versions. I do kinda wonder about the magnets though, seems like it could wreck havoc with some devices. I suppose they have tested though, and wouldn't be releasing it if there where problems like that.

I believe the magnets are used to keep the wind flap over the zipper closed.

That is SOOOO trusting of you!

Seriously, though, the magnets really don't pose a problem. I had the same questions last year when several PDA case makers included magnet closures, but they aren't strong enough to cause any damage.

Oh I see. Well thats pretty cool. That would give the jacket a nice clean look in the front. I like that idea. 8)

I am not sure this is a valid example of cause an effect. For example, I don't have one and I look like a dork. :?

geeky guy, lots of money

haven't any of you ever read the Scott Adams' essay, "Why geeks make better lovers"??

It's priceless. We're devoted (YES, DAMMIT, I'M A GEEK, makes my wife happy), we are grateful, and we're making better livings than the guys who used to beat us up.

Now, if that isn't living better what is?

 8O

where can the 2.5 eVest be purchased? It is not listed on the ScotteVest web site.

I believe that, since the announcement has just been made, they're not actually shipping them yet. Since I think that you can only order them directly from ScotteVest, I'd just keep checking their website from time to time.

:o Regarding the magnets, we did test them! We believe that they don't cause any damage. They are VERY small, and have little magnetic power, just enough to close the jacket and keep it closed. It is in addition to the zipper, and is WAY COOL. Our test was to put all different types of memory between the magnets overnight and see if the data was compromised at all. In all cases, no damage. Moreover, the magnets don't cover the pockets. Having said all that, if you are crazy enough to leave a magnet, any magnet, directly on your device for an extended period of time, I cannot unequivocally guaranty you that you won't experience any problems, but given the configuration on Version 2.5, it is HIGHLY unlikely.

BTW, the vest is shipping now, and selling like crazy. See www.scottevest.com. It was recently featured in USA Today, and today it is in the London Sun Times, see http://www.thesun.co.uk/section/0,,2001310000,00.html. I believe it will be in Business Week next week too.
