<a href="http://www.bcltechnologies.com/products/voicemp3/main.htm#">http://www.bcltechnologies.com/products/voicemp3/main.htm#</a><br /><br />Now THIS is some interesting software! BCL Technologies is looking for beta testers to help with the imminent launch of their newest product, VoiceMP3. The software is not only an MP3 player, but it also allows the user to control the player via voice commands.<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/adrian/voicemp3.jpg" /><br /><br />The list of terms that the software can recognize is pretty impressive:<br /><br />Main Commands<br />Load [file name]<br />File Name, Song Name<br />Play, Play Song<br />Stop, Pause<br />Play Next, Next<br />Play Previous, Previous, Back<br />Repeat, Replay<br />Volume Commands<br />Maximum, Volume Maximum<br />Minimum, Volume Minimum, Mute<br />Volume Up<br />Volume Down<br />Marker Commands <br />Next file, Next Song<br />Previous File, Previous Song<br />Play, Play Song<br />Marker, Marker Name<br />Cancel<br />Other Commands<br />Shuffle, Random<br />Screen Off, Turn Off Screen<br />Screen On, Turn On Screen<br /><br />I haven't tried this yet, but if you have, let me know what you think of this program?

Sounds cool...but how many people would really want to use voice commands to control their MP3 player? :?

What happens if I'm listening to an audiobook with the word 'stop' in it?

I would assume you'd have to hit the Record button from within the app to give a command (hopefully at least).

OK so first of all, neat idea, but I don't see how it can be practically implemented. If I have to press a button to get it to recognize my voice, then what is the point in having it in the first place? I can just press whatever button I have mapped for the function I want to use... Now, lets say you don't have to press a button, how is it going to hear me when I can't even hear myself while my car stereo is cranking out 120 decibals?

Hmmm well I just read over it again and I suppose there is one thing it could do that would be useful, and that is if it accurately recognizes file names. Having to pick the thing up and manually search for a file is a bit annoying. Being able to just turn down the volume and then say that would be worth it, but I can't think any other use (that you couldn't do by just pressing a button)

The voice recognition capabilities of BCL VoiceMP3 are usefull when you want to search for a song without having to scroll down the list and pick out the one you want... just say "Load [song name]." The "Play" "Stop" "Next" features are fun, but you can also use the buttons on the front of the PDA.

Also, the audio output of the PDA does not interfere with the speech recognition. In order to speak a command, the user must:

PRESS and HOLD the record button on the side of the device and wait for the audio prompt signal.

WAIT ½ of a second and then SPEAK into your PDA's built-in microphone at a distance of 1 - 4 feet.

RELEASE the record button approximately 1 second after speaking.

Another feature (that is not offered by other MP3 players) is “Turn Off Screen” which will extend the battery life considerably (BCL VoiceMP3 can still be controlled by voice). To turn it back on, simply press one of the buttons on the PDA.

Windows Media Player has this feature as well. Is yours different somehow?

VoiceMP3 will actually turn the screen completely off (while leaving the audio on). There are a few utility programs out there that will turn the monitor off, but this feature is not integrated into any MP3 players as far as we know.

Windows Media Player will. Look in Tools|Settings|Buttons. Now, in box 1 select "Screen Toggle." Now press a button to assign it to. Now press OK. Now press your button. It has been like that since April 2000 when Pocket PCs shipped.

Sure enough you’re right. Keep in mind however, that with VoiceMP3, you can speak the name of a song when the screen is off and it will advance to that song.

I frequently use my iPAQ while running. Being able to use voice commands would be a great advantage so that I didn't have to stop to fiddle with it. I could see using it while driving as well.

...If I have to press a button to get it to recognize my voice, then what is the point in having it in the first place?...

One benefit I can see is that it's not always easy to find the right on-screen button to start and stop playing. Pressing the hard button and speaking the command might be easier, especially if I'm driving (not that I would EVER let myself get distracted by anything while driving).

What I think would be neat is a pair of headphones with remote control buttons (like my minidisk controls) that communicate with the Ipaq via bluetooth........no more fiddling round in my bag/pocket to change volume, skip tracks etc
